Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the football World cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

In my perspective, when it comes to sports, people become more excited and happy rather be in competition with anyone. Tournaments like Olympics and Football world cup are more likely to be fun rather then a competition or a fight.

People from all over the world travelled to the destination designated to the sport just to enjoy the game or relax, not to fight with people. So most likely these type of sports bring countries close to each other, and also people of different ethnicity become close to each others too and their is no competition type of thing.

On the other hand, Some people are very aggressive about some specific sport, for instance my brother is very passionate about football, and he practice every single day, whenever he loses the match he become very tense and angry too.

So some people are emotionally attached with some sort of the sports, and they can not handle it when they lose so they become more aggressive. And for them it become competition and they take it on their ego and fight but the ratio of these people are very less like 10 to 20 %.

In conclusion, I would say that these type of tournaments are just for enjoy and relax and not for the competition. So everyone should take these games as entertainment not for fighting with each other.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views—that sports bring countries together and that they create competition and aggression—and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed, relying heavily on personal anecdotes rather than broader societal arguments. For instance, the discussion of the opposing view uses a specific example of the writer's brother rather than exploring national or international rivalries. This places the performance firmly in the Band 5 to 6 range. Because the main parts of the task are touched upon and a clear stance is maintained throughout, it satisfies the criteria for Band 5.5, showing a basic attempt to address the prompt fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is organized into distinct paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by body paragraphs for each view, and a brief conclusion. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often basic or repetitive, such as 'So', 'And', and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'these type of sports' or 'these type of tournaments' which appear frequently. Paragraphing is present, but the logical flow between sentences within paragraphs lacks sophistication, resulting in a somewhat mechanical structure. This overall organizational pattern aligns well with the Band 5 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'tournament', 'ethnicity', 'aggressive', and 'entertainment'. There are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation throughout the text, including phrases like 'rather be in competition' instead of 'rather than being in competition', 'travelled' instead of 'travel', 'their is no competition type of thing', and 'for enjoy and relax'. Spelling errors such as 'world cup' capitalization inconsistencies also occur. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a vocabulary profile characteristic of Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'he practice every single day', 'whenever he loses the match he become', and 'attached with some sort of the sports'. Punctuation is also weak, with run-on sentences joined simply by coordinating conjunctions. Although some complex structures are attempted, they are frequently faulty. Because the errors occur frequently and occasionally strain the reader's understanding, the performance matches the Band 5 descriptors.
