Student answer (Band 6.0)

People have different views about whether international games such as olympics and soccer world cup are a good way to bring countries together. Although, Some individuals believe that it can lead to competition while others argue that it does not result to friendship between both countries.

Firstly, one major importance of this is it will lead to cultural exchange. In other words, people from differnt hometown meet and learn about each others culture. Unless such oppourtunities are granted, the public wont be able to learn about other peope culltural background or heritage. Secondly, athletes and spectators meet and interact with one another. For example, If during the olympic game visitors from different nations will stay in the host city and experience the local custom and food. As a consequence, this can promote mutual understanding and respect so that there will be unity. This demonstrates why it will create a shared experience and it can be very benficial to host such games because it will bring people together and increase tourism.

However, one major downsides for this beautiful game is it can be the leading cause of competition. This is because, strong national pride can create rivalry. Whereas, supporters may become emotionally attached to their country's success. For instance, If a match is ongoing, the opposing supporters may argue because they are desperate for their country to win. What's a game without a winner by the way?. As a result, it could lead to tension and weaken the friendship between supporters. Furthermore, the pressure to win can overshadow the friendship. This clearly shows why this occasion may be competitive most times even though that wasn't the initial intention for the host country.

In conclusion, a football match may have some. advantages because it will create a good sense of unity between two nations. Although, it may be competitve and this may contribute to rivarly. In my opinion, I believe this is largely a positive development because it create international cooperation and builds international friendships.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the task, discussing how international sports events can unite countries through cultural exchange and tourism, as well as how they can create competition and rivalry. A clear personal position is presented in the conclusion and introduced in the body. However, the development of ideas occasionally lacks depth and relies on simplistic reasoning, such as 'What's a game without a winner by the way?'. Examples provided are somewhat generic and repetitive ('If a match is ongoing...'). While the prompt refers to international events generally, the student focuses quite narrowly on football and the Olympics, which is acceptable, but overall development corresponds to a Band 6.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is divided into logical paragraphs with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes clumsy or mechanical, such as 'one major downsides for this beautiful game is...' and the sentence fragments 'Although, Some individuals...' and 'Although, it may be competitve...'. Paragraphing is present and appropriate, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs occasionally falters due to punctuation and syntactic errors, placing it firmly at a Band 6.0 level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student attempts a range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, including phrases like 'cultural exchange', 'mutual understanding', 'national pride', and 'international cooperation'. However, there are numerous lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'differnt' instead of different, 'oppourtunities' instead of opportunities, 'peope' instead of people, 'culltural' instead of cultural, 'benficial' instead of beneficial, and 'competitve' instead of competitive. These errors, alongside slightly unnatural collocations ('result to friendship'), prevent the lexical score from reaching a higher band, reflecting a Band 5.5 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures ('If a match is ongoing, the opposing supporters may argue...') and dependent clauses. However, control of grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several sentence structure errors, such as starting sentences with conjunctions incorrectly ('Although, Some individuals believe...', 'Whereas, supporters may become...'), subject-verb agreement issues ('the public wont', 'it create international cooperation'), and fragments. Frequent punctuation errors, including unnecessary commas, are also present. These errors cause some distraction for the reader, placing the grammar score at Band 5.5.
