Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, there is growing of tendency about overseas relationship related to participating international sports events such as World Cup or Olympics. Howerver, some people might say these events increse conflict between countries, I totally believe they are ultimately a great way to bring people together.

One the one hand, there are clear significant reasons why big sports competitions can create conflict between nations. Firstly, fans and players often feel overwhelmed and intensive pressure due to winning for their countries. This can lead to nationalism, aggressive behavior even cheating such as using performance drugs.Beside that, disagreements during matches such as bad decision from referees can cause arguments between supporters from different countries on social media. For example, in some football World Cup matches, there are a lot aggressive actions by fans from opposing team can lead to negative impact in particular or arguments between countries in general.

On the other hand, I strongly agree with those who believe these tournaments are a chance to foster international relationship around the world. Hosting these events allows fans and athletes from all over the world to meet, share cultures and understand each other better. For instance, World Cup 2026 in Canada, supporters came to Vancouver to support their team, they also can explore canadian culture and especially the people here. Next, these events can stand a chance for collaborating countries together. During the event, countries put aside political differences to play sports together under fair rules, promoting global peace. Moreover, people from these countries will have opportunities to realize that they can contribute global peace together.

In conclusion, although major sports events can cause intense competition and negative effect at that time. I totally believe main impact is connecting different nations. These tournaments provide a valuable chance for people worldwide to connect and celebrate diversity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that international sports events create conflict and that they bring countries together—and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The ideas are generally relevant and extended, such as discussing nationalism, fair rules, and cultural exchange. For instance, the mention of the 2026 World Cup in Canada grounds the argument with a relevant example. However, some arguments lack full depth, and terms like 'canadian' are uncapitalised. Overall, the task response is solid, earning a band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is divided into logical paragraphs with a clear introduction and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal shifts, such as 'One the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, some cohesive links are faulty, notably 'One the one hand' (missing 'n') and 'Beside that'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, for example, 'by fans from opposing team can lead to negative impact in particular or arguments between countries in general', where the clause structure becomes tangled. Paragraphing is present and appropriate, but the internal flow of sentences could be smoother. This corresponds to a band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'nationalism', 'aggressive behavior', 'political differences', and 'cultural exchange'. However, there are notable word-choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'growing of tendency about overseas relationship related to participating international' instead of 'growing tendency regarding international relations', and 'intensive pressure' instead of 'intense pressure'. Spelling errors are also present, such as 'Howerver' and 'increse'. While communication remains clear, these inaccuracies limit the score to a band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or participial clauses like 'Hosting these events allows fans and athletes...' and 'During the event, countries put aside...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with prepositions, verb forms, and articles, such as 'due to winning for their countries', 'bad decision from referees', and 'supporters came... they also can explore'. Run-on sentences and punctuation slips also occur, such as fragmenting sentences before 'I totally believe'. Because errors are frequent though they rarely impede overall communication, this fits the band 5.5 criteria well.
