Student answer (Band 6.0)
While few people argue that major international events like The Olympics or the Football World cup are an effective way to unite nations, whereas other believe that they can increase rivalry rather than promoting friendship. In my opinion, sports events generally brings countries closer together, although some competition is unavoidable.
One major reason why international sports event usually bring nations together is that they allow people from different cultures to share common interest. To which it is said that international events allow people to experience different cultures, traditions and national identities. For example, during the Olympics, athletes from many countries live and compete in the same place. Fans from different cultures communicate with people from different nations culture and watch event at same place. As a result, such events allow to bring nations together and create respect between countries.
On the other hand, international sports events can sometimes create a rivalry because fans strongly want to defeat their opponents. Fans strongly support their own national team upon losing sometime create disappointment or arguments between fans. For example, during a final football match it can become extremely competitive when their national team is playing against each other. Arguments between supporters often happens, especially when match are very close or played unfair. As a result, due to close match between teams create a rivalry between them rather than friendship.
I believe however, there are some unavoidable competition among team that can lead to rivalry but international events like the Olympics or the Football World cup are usually a good way to bring all nations together as they share their culture values, traditions and allow people to experience different cultures. Overall such events has positive impact.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on international sports events and providing a clear personal opinion. The introduction states the writer's view clearly, and both body paragraphs discuss the contrasting perspectives. For instance, the first body paragraph explores how events like the Olympics unite nations through shared cultures, while the second paragraph details how rivalry and arguments can emerge among fans. However, some ideas are slightly repetitive or under-developed, particularly in the reasoning regarding fans and competition, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Overall, the task is answered satisfactorily, and a clear position is maintained throughout the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a standard essay structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the opening sentence contains a grammatical glitch with the transition 'While few people argue... whereas other believe...', which disrupts the flow. Additionally, cohesive devices like 'As a result' are overused ('As a result, such events allow...', 'As a result, due to close match...'). Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'To which it is said that...', leading to a disjointed flow in places.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'international sports events', 'traditions', 'national identities', and 'supporters'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are sometimes accompanied by inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'played unfair' instead of 'played unfairly', and 'match are very close' instead of 'matches are very close'. Spelling is generally accurate, but awkward phrasing like 'national team upon losing sometime create disappointment' limits the precision and flexibility of the language, placing it firmly in the Band 6 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and prepositional use. Examples include 'sports events generally brings' (plural noun with singular verb), 'international sports event usually bring' (missing article/pluralisation issues), and 'there are some unavoidable competition' (disagreement between 'are' and 'competition'). Punctuation is generally functional, but structural errors such as the dangling clause in the opening sentence ('While few people argue... whereas other believe...') interfere with readability. These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader.
