Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, a growing number of individuals argue, that large sport events like Olympics and football world cup play a major part in bringing together nations and eleminating any sour relations. While others believe that such events increases hatred and competition amongst nations.
On the one hand, world cup and olympics is a great initiative to bring countries together which have some tensions with eachother. These events are multinational and are organised in different countries every year. the major advantage of this is that it allows people to tarvel to other countries where they learn more about a particular culture of the place , the cusine and the kind of people living there which fosters better bonds between two countries. For example, the football world cup which took place in USA and Canada in 2026 played a major role in reviving relations between the two countries.
On the other hand, games are usually competitive and play a major role in creating rifts between countries. Sport games are very competitive where players from different countries face eachother and play to secure a higher position, this creates a negative atmosphere amongst the fans who come to the game. For instance, when India plays against Pakistan in a cricket world cup, fans from both the sides troll eachother in the stadium and online, there are evidences as well where fans haven endup fighting physically in the stadium.
In conclusion, though these events help to get nations together and eleminate tensions. We cannot deny the fact that competition will always create a sense of hatred. Therefore, I believe that there should be better ways to develop relations which are a permanent fix to the problems and rather than focusing on fixing them temporarily for an event.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on international sports events—uniting nations versus creating competition and hatred—and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are generally well-extended, such as the example of the football world cup and the mention of India-Pakistan cricket matches. However, the explanation regarding the 2026 World Cup in the USA and Canada is slightly historically inaccurate, as the nations involved are not typically seen as having severe political tensions. Additionally, the conclusion introduces a slight shift in thought rather than just summarising. Overall, the task is successfully and fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay is organised into four distinct paragraphs with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs presenting opposing views, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal shifts between ideas, such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and punctuation are sometimes faulty, such as comma splices ('argue, that large sport') and inconsistent capitalisation ('the major advantage', 'the football world cup'). Paragraphing is sufficient, but logical progression within paragraphs could be tightened with more seamless transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'fosters better bonds', 'multinational', and 'reviving relations'. However, there are several spelling errors throughout the text, including 'eleminating', 'tarvel', 'cusine', and 'endup'. Word choice and collocations are occasionally unnatural, such as 'sport games' instead of 'sports matches' or 'sporting events', and 'troll eachother' in a slightly informal register. Communication remains clear despite these lexical shortcomings.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses ('which have some tensions') and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent due to frequent punctuation errors, incorrect comma placement before subordinate clauses ('argue, that...'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('events increases'). There are also sentence fragments and run-on sentences, such as 'In conclusion, though these events help to get nations together and eleminate tensions. We cannot deny...'. Complex structures are attempted with varying degrees of success.
