Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, a growing number of individuals argue, that large sports events like the Olympics and the Football World Cup play a major part in bringing together nations and eliminating any sour relations. While others believe that such events increase hatred and competition amongst nations.
On the one hand, the world cup and the olympics is a great initiative to bring countries together which have some tensions with each other. These events are multinational and are organised in different countries every year. The major advantage of this is that it allows people to tarvel to other countries where they learn more about a particular culture of the place , the cuisine and the kind of people living there which fosters better bonds between two countries. For example, the football world cup which took place in USA and Canada in 2026 played a major role in reviving relations between the two countries.
On the other hand, games are usually competitive and play a major role in creating rifts between countries. Sports games are very competitive in nature, where players from different countries face each other and play to secure a higher position. This creates a negative atmosphere amongst the fans who come to watch the game. For instance, when India plays against Pakistan in a cricket world cup, fans from both sides troll each other in the stadium or online, and there are evidence where fans have ended up fighting physically in the stadium.
In conclusion, these events help to get nations together and eliminate tensions. We cannot deny the fact that competition will always create a sense of hatred. Therefore, I believe that there should be better ways to develop relations which are a permanent fix to the problems rather than focusing on fixing them temporarily for an event.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that international sports bring countries together and that they create competition and conflict—while also clearly stating the writer's own opinion in the conclusion. The main ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of the 2026 World Cup involving the USA and Canada, and cricket matches between India and Pakistan. However, some arguments remain slightly under-developed, particularly the explanation of how these events temporarily fix issues. Overall, the writer presents a clear position throughout, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.5, rounded to Band 6.0 based on the balanced depth of idea development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is logically organised into four distinct paragraphs with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs exploring opposing views, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and paragraph internal cohesion are occasionally mechanical or slightly faulty, such as the abrupt pronoun shift and phrase transitions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. The progression of ideas is generally clear overall, fitting the descriptors for Band 6.0 well.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, with terms like 'multinational', 'fosters better bonds', and 'reviving relations'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('tarvel') and minor collocation or word choice slips ('there are evidence where fans'). The student attempts less common vocabulary, but these inaccuracies prevent the response from reaching a higher band. The lexical resource demonstrated is sufficient for the task and aligns with Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures. There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors present throughout the text. For instance, the unnecessary comma after 'argue' in the opening sentence, subject-verb agreement issues ('the world cup and the olympics is'), and the plural noun mismatch ('there are evidence'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument without major difficulty. This performance fits the Band 6.0 descriptors for grammatical range and accuracy.
