Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on international sports events—bringing nations together versus creating competition—and clearly states a personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant, including pre-match handshakes, national anthems, cultural exploration, and fan behavior. However, some arguments are somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding cultural tourism in the later body paragraphs, leaning towards over-generalisation. The development is adequate for a Band 6.5 or 6.0 level, as some points remain slightly under-developed and rely on general statements rather than deep elaboration. Overall, the task is addressed fairly well, fulfilling the requirements of Band 6.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay is arranged into logical paragraphs with a clear introduction and conclusion. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by mechanical and repetitive use of cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover', 'As a result', and 'In my opinion', which appear frequently. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'do hate with them' or 'so, they think it does not bring countries together'. Paragraphing is used, but the overall logical flow within body paragraphs can feel repetitive and slightly disjointed. This aligns with the characteristics of Band 6 for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting words like 'international', 'reputation', 'diversity', and 'traditions'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'reduce good relations', 'components think', 'do hate with them', and 'messy environment'. Spelling errors also occur, such as 'becuase', 'compitition', and 'cultues'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to Band 5.5 or 6.0. Given that communication remains clear despite the flaws, a Band 6 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures frequently contain grammatical errors or awkward phrasing, such as 'Why some people say that... are a good way... becuase when they play together then they do handshake...' and 'when they see their favourite players do not win the match and pass bad comments'. Subject-verb agreement issues ('international sports events is the best way') and preposition errors are present. Although these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the writing from reaching Band 6.5. Therefore, a Band 6 is awarded.
