IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, countries want to participate in the Olympics to raise the standard of their nations. That's why most of the people believe that holding international events like FIFA and others builds a positive connection between countries, but some oppose it. The following paragraph will provide a detailed explanation of the above-mentioned views and my own opinion.

First and foremost, conducting international-level games in a country assists the economy and financially to the country. In Addition, if visitors come to the hosting nation, it will bring financial growth to the country because the visitors not only spend their money in the country to watch the sports, but it also builds hype at the global level. For instance, in 2026, Canada, the USA, and Mexico are hosting the FIFA World Cup; this occasion will bring a huge amount of money to these nations as well as help build their names.

On the other hand, some think that these competitions only create events, not a friendly environment between the countries, because tourists spoil the atmosphere of regions. Furthermore, when they go outside to travel to other places, they do not know how to live and follow the rules; it will cause problems for the local people, such as in June when FIFA is ongoing, tourists leave a lot of garbage on the streets, which affects the surroundings, and they do not even know the 3 R's rule in Canada, which leads to suffering for locals.

In my opinion, I'm on the side of the former statement because, when hosting events, everyone knows about each other's homelands. Additionally, I think they learn more about each other's culture, their religions, and so on, which builds positive connections between the nations

As a result, global-level sports have a good effect on countries' events like FIFA and the Olympics; however, some weren't liked.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that international sports events foster unity and that they generate competition or negative local impacts—and clearly states the writer's own opinion in the final paragraphs. Ideas are generally relevant, such as the economic boost mentioned in the second paragraph and local disruption mentioned in the third. However, some arguments lack full extension and slip into slight over-generalisation or tangential details, such as the specific mention of tourists not knowing the '3 R's rule in Canada'. The position is maintained throughout, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'First and foremost', 'In Addition', and 'On the other hand', but some referencing and cohesion feel a bit mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'the former statement' when referring to a view rather than a statement. Overall logical progression is present, placing this performance securely within Band 6.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'international-level games', 'hosting nation', 'financial growth', and 'atmosphere'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though accompanied by word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'assists the economy and financially to the country' and 'create events, not a friendly environment'. Spelling is generally accurate, but lexical control is inconsistent, placing it at a Band 6 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. While there are control issues and frequent minor errors—such as 'most of the people believe', 'financially to the country', and run-on structures like 'visitors not only spend their money in the country to watch the sports, but it also builds hype'—these errors rarely impede overall communication. The majority of simple sentences are clear, and complex structures are attempted with varying success, aligning with the Band 6 descriptors.
