Student answer (Band 6.0)

International sports events such as Olympics, football world cup and many other games attract people from many countries. Some individuals think that it is good way to come together, while other argue that they increase the competitions between two nations. This essay will discuss both views, and I personally believe that international games can make a strong relation when they are managed properly.

On the one hand, international sport events can bring countries together. Athletes from the different nation live and compete in the same place with other team member which is give them opportunities to communicate and understand different culture. In addition, audience from different countries often watch match together and share their excitement. For an example, during the football world cup, millions of people are following the same game regardless of their nationality. Therefore, this can create sense of unity and encourage people to respect other cultures.

However, sport competition can some time create problems between to countries. Fans may become extremely emption and feel sad when their team loses, and this can lead arguments or negative behaviour. Moreover, players and supporters may feel strong under pressure to defeat other nations because they want their country win. Sometime political disagreements become noticeable during the any big events. As a result, competition can sometimes reduce the friendly relation in between two nations.

In conclusion, although international sports naturally involve competition, but they can still be an effective way to build the friendship. Competition is part of the any games, but players can learn to respect their opposite team. I believe that, the Olympics and word cups provide a valuable opportunities for the people to come closer from other cultures.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on international sports events—bringing countries together versus increasing competition—and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are relevant and extended, such as mentioning athletes communicating and understanding different cultures, and fans sharing excitement during events like the football world cup. However, some arguments lack deeper development and generalization occurs, which places this response comfortably in the Band 6 or 7 territory. For instance, the counter-argument regarding political disagreements and pressure to win is introduced but not fully exemplified. Overall, the task is properly fulfilled with a clear stance maintained throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response features a clear overall progression and logical organization with a recognizable four-paragraph structure. Paragraphs have clear central topics, moving from an introduction to supporting views, opposing views, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used throughout, such as 'On the one hand', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. However, there are instances where cohesion feels slightly mechanical or referencing is slightly faulty, such as 'in between two nations' or awkward transitional phrasing. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but logical progression could be smoother in places. Therefore, the response demonstrates strong Band 6 characteristics with some features of Band 7.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting some less common lexical items such as 'nationality', 'disagreements', and 'supporters'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, as well as grammatical-lexical slips throughout the text. Examples include 'increase the competitions' instead of 'competition', 'extreme emption' instead of 'extreme emotion', and 'feel strong under pressure' instead of 'feel under strong pressure'. Additionally, spelling and word forms occasionally falter ('word cups' instead of 'World Cups'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the score from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional-like structures (e.g., 'when they are managed properly', 'Athletes from the different nation live and compete...'). There are, however, frequent grammatical errors regarding articles, plurals, and verb forms. Examples include 'such as Olympics' (missing article), 'Athletes from the different nation' (plural/article mismatch), 'which is give them' (faulty verb structure), and 'during the any big events' (unnecessary article). Despite these recurring errors, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout, justifying a solid Band 6 score.
