Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views on international sports events and providing an opinion, which places it in the middle tier of task achievement. However, important limitations keep the score at this level. First, the essay falls short of the minimum length requirement of 250 words, containing only 230 words. This directly restricts the depth of the discussion. While the writer attempts to cover both perspectives and gives an opinion, the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the arguments regarding competition and tension between countries in the third paragraph are repetitive and lack specific, well-developed examples. The writer's position is visible, particularly in the conclusion, but the overall lack of sufficient expansion and the unfulfilled word count prevent a higher rating.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays some overall organization with clear paragraph breaks, dividing the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion appropriately. The writer attempts to use sequence markers such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' to structure the response. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally disjointed, and the cohesive devices are often mechanical, inadequate, or repetitive. For example, transitions between sentences within the body paragraphs feel abrupt, such as moving from 'They can know their culture and traditions each other' to 'For example, Olympics practice time sports persons develop their friendship'. Referencing and linking are sometimes unclear, which disrupts the flow of the text and prevents the response from achieving a clearer, more logical progression throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with a reliance on basic terms and frequent errors in word choice and word form. The student attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'international sports competition' and 'relationship and respect increase', but these attempts are marred by inaccurate phrasing or incorrect collocations, such as 'bring nation together' instead of 'nations together', or 'plyers and supports' instead of 'players and supporters'. Spelling mistakes and inaccurate word forms, like 'athletics' used in place of 'athletes' or 'athletic events', are noticeable throughout the text. These lexical inaccuracies occasionally cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted vocabulary range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentence forms. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to structural awkwardness and frequent errors in grammar. For example, sentences such as 'This essay will discuss both and giving my opinion' and 'Some time they make long time friendship' display poor verb form control and missing elements. There are frequent errors in prepositions, articles, subject-verb agreement, and pluralization, such as 'different country' instead of 'different countries' and 'If any team lose game' instead of 'loses a game'. These frequent grammatical errors require reader effort to interpret meaning and clearly indicate a restricted control of grammatical range and accuracy.
