Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response only partially addresses the task due to severe length issues, falling significantly short of the minimum two-hundred-and-fifty-word requirement at only one hundred and twenty-eight words. While the writer manages to introduce both views in the opening paragraph and begins to explore the idea of international sports events building relations, the ideas are severely limited and under-developed. For example, the mention of the FIFA World Cup is abruptly cut off mid-sentence: 'For instance, Fifa World Cup, which was recently organised in Canada'. Because the response is cut off prematurely, the discussion of both views is incomplete, and the writer's own opinion is not fully articulated or supported with adequate reasons and examples. To reach a higher band, the essay must meet the length requirement and fully develop ideas for each view with complete, well-supported arguments and a clear conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows some basic organisation, utilizing an introductory paragraph and transitional phrases such as 'On the one hand,' to signal the progression of ideas. However, there is no clear overall progression because the text stops abruptly mid-sentence, preventing the essay from developing a complete structure. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final body paragraph is incomplete. Cohesive devices are used in a basic manner, but referencing and logical flow are constrained by the brevity of the text. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to ensure that paragraphs are fully completed, ideas are logically sequenced from introduction through body paragraphs to a proper conclusion, and cohesive devices are employed more effectively to guide the reader smoothly through a fully developed argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary suitable for discussing the topic of sports and international relations, incorporating terms such as 'international sports events', 'diversity', and 'multicultural people'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices throughout the text, such as 'relation' instead of 'relations', 'natioins' (spelling error), and 'people other culture' (missing preposition/collocation). Additionally, word forms are occasionally inaccurate, such as 'opinionon'. These errors cause some slight distraction for the reader. To move to a higher band, the writer should expand their vocabulary range, incorporate less common lexical items with greater precision, and pay closer attention to spelling, word formation, and natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic complex forms. There are frequent grammatical errors that can cause some difficulty for the reader, particularly concerning articles, prepositions, and plurals. Examples include 'on the international sports events' (unnecessary article), 'in a same statdium' (incorrect article and spelling), and 'play together in a same' (redundancy/error). Verb patterns and prepositional phrases also show instability, as seen in 'build a relation with the people other culture'. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate greater control over complex sentence structures, improve accuracy in grammatical agreements and articles, and eliminate frequent errors in basic sentence mechanics.
