Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that whether organising international sports helps to create a strong bond between countries or drift them away. While the citizens from distinct countries often gets into heated arguements because of international sports events, these events broaden the horizons for players and support the country financially.

People often fight with each other over their favourite team performance. Although everyone wants their favourite team or player to win, a losing team disappoints their fans which channel their emotions into destruction. As people are emotionally attached to a game, they take the game very seriously, which lead to a fight amongst different team supporters. Morever, few people put their country rivarly forward instead of professionalism. For instance, a cricket match between India and Pakistan is held professionaly; however, citizens of both the countries take it as a personal rivarly by mocking each other on the internet.

Conversely, people love to watch international sports events. These sports not only provide the opportunity to players to interact with each other, but also help them to improve their performance. Furthermore, this platform allows different country's player to show their talent to the world. A healthy competition is always benefitial for players to nurture their talent to achieve greater heights. For instance, in Olympics, Athletes from distinct countries come together to compete with each other, which motivates them to do better every year so that they can win the medals. In addition, the player represents their country's rich culture to the world, which attracts a lot of tourists. The viewership of such events also increase as people across the globe watches it on online or visit the centres personally. Therefore, it also increases the GDP of a country.

In conclusion, although some people release their perosnal grudges on other people, I believe international sports events foster an environment where participants grow physically and mentally. Also, it provides a financial growth to a country as people across the globe visit and watch these events.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on international sports events—whether they bring countries together or create competition and hostility—and clearly states an opinion in the conclusion. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For example, while the discussion on financial benefits and player development is supported with relevant examples like the Olympics, the exploration of fan hostility in the second paragraph relies on sweeping generalisations and remains somewhat under-developed. To move to a higher level, the writer would need to extend and support all main arguments with deeper analysis rather than moving quickly between points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the discussion into introduction, body paragraphs addressing both views, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. The use of transition markers like 'Morever' and 'Conversely' attempts to link ideas, but referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun shift in 'As people are emotionally attached to a game... they take the game very seriously, which lead to a fight amongst different team supporters.' To improve, the writer should ensure smoother logical transitions between sentences and more precise referencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'broaden the horizons', 'channel their emotions', and 'foster an environment'. Communication is not impeded by lexical choices, but there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'arguements' instead of 'arguments', 'rivarly' instead of 'rivalry', 'benefitial' instead of 'beneficial', and 'perosnal' instead of 'personal'. Additionally, some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'put their country rivarly forward'. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand the range of vocabulary while exercising greater precision and accuracy in spelling and word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as in 'citizens from distinct countries often gets into heated arguements because of international sports events'. There are, however, some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Subject-verb agreement errors occur, such as 'gets' instead of 'get', and 'lead' instead of 'leads'. Article and pluralisation errors are also present, such as 'in Olympics' instead of 'in the Olympics' and 'different country's player' instead of 'different countries' players'. Although these errors rarely impede communication, they reflect the characteristics of a developing grammatical control that requires more consistency in complex structures.
