Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is believed by group of people that international sport events bring nations together, while others think that these events bring competition among the countries instead of friendship. Although both views have its own significance, I think these competitions bring countries together with culture exchange. I will discuss both the views along with my opinion.

On the one hand, people who think international sports bring countries together say that, when countries organize sports event at each other's nation, people visit one another nations, and they explore different culture. Additionally, tourists meet other country's resident, and they share common belief with each other and become friends. Some people from different countries who visit another country to enjoy the international sports when meet with individuals with same interest, it builds friendship among them. For instance, India organizes cricket world cup every year, as players from several nations come to India to play, they become friends because of their common support interest.

On the other hand, individuals who oppose former opinion believe that international sports events create competition among countries instead of friendship. In other words, when nations player play against other countries, it creates sense of competition in the citizens. Every resident support their own country player, and which sometimes put detrimental effect on the countries relationship. To exemplify, last year when Australia and India had a international tennis match, and Australia won the match. Australian people were teasing the Indian people because their team lost the match. As a result, it created competition among them and ruin the relationships.

To conclude, although international sports bring nations together with cultural exchange, and it also brings competition when people play against each other's country. In my opinion, international events bring people together because it gives chance to people to explore each other's tradition and culture. Governments should arrange these competitions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the view that international sports events foster unity and the opposing view that they create competition, while also providing your own opinion. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat uneven. While you present relevant points regarding cultural exchange and national rivalries, some arguments are under-developed or supported with unclear examples. For instance, the claim that 'India organizes cricket world cup every year' is factually inaccurate and detracts from the strength of your support. To reach a higher band, you need to ensure that all main ideas are fully extended with precise, accurate explanations and more robust real-world examples that directly reinforce your position throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your essay demonstrates a clear overall arrangement with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint, and a conclusion. You make use of standard cohesive devices to signal transitions, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude'. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'oppose former opinion' or repetitive sentence openings. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, but to achieve a higher band, you need to demonstrate more flexible and sophisticated use of cohesive devices, ensuring that relationships between sentences and paragraphs flow more naturally and are never overly formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'cultural exchange', 'detrimental effect', and 'tradition'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and collocation throughout your writing. Examples include 'international sport events' instead of 'sports events', 'countries relationship' instead of 'countries' relationships', and 'ruin the relationships' where 'ruined' is required. Furthermore, there are awkward phrasing choices like 'common support interest'. These vocabulary and spelling inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict your score. To improve, focus on precise word forms, accurate collocations, and checking your phrasing during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional and concessive clauses with 'Although both views have its own significance' and 'when countries organize sports event'. However, your control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent, containing frequent errors in article usage, plurals, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions. Examples of these errors include 'group of people' missing an article ('a group'), 'views have its own significance' (pronoun agreement error), 'sports event' instead of the plural, and missing commas in complex structures. These errors persist throughout the text, although they rarely impede overall communication. To move to a higher band, you must increase your proportion of error-free sentences and refine your control over basic grammatical agreements and article placement.
