Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is believed by a few people that international sports events such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup are a great way to bring countries together. However, others argue that these events create competition, not friendship between nations. This essay will delve deeper into both the perspectives and will justify my support for former statement.
On one hand, international events are considered significant to bring different nations close for many reasons. Firstly, these events are the means of a common platform for the countries to experience a shared value, culture and emotions, where anyone can take participate and enjoy the games despite having a distinct nationality. Consequently, many countries feel motivated to build relations with another nations. Secondly, the host country receives funding from worldwide countries which encourage another countries to host these major events in their country, which means providing financial support also ensure strong relationship among countries.
On the other side, the proponents of the latter scenario holds a valid reason that these events create rigorous competition, not friendship. The winner country often gets fame and popularity, also, attracts another people to migrate to their country. The currency rate surges drastically when more and more people immigrate to one country which ultimately create a sense of fierce competition because every country wants a monopoly and to dominate the currency exchange rates over other nation.
Considering both of these viewpoints, I firmly support the former phenomenon because of the above stated reasons. Contrary, one should not forget the negative consequences of these events.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on international sports events and providing a clear personal position in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the first body paragraph presents a relevant point about cultural sharing, the explanation tends to generalise rather than being fully extended with specific examples. Similarly, the reasoning in the second body paragraph regarding currency exchange rates and economic dominance is somewhat unclear and limited in its direct connection to the prompt. To move to a higher band, the ideas need to be more thoroughly explored and supported with deeper explanations and concrete illustrations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance stated early on and paragraphs divided logically into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'On one hand', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'On the other side'. However, referencing and cohesion are at times mechanical or slightly faulty, for instance with phrases like 'support for former statement' missing an article and transitional phrasing feeling somewhat formulaic. Paragraphing is used adequately, but the logical progression between the final paragraph and the preceding arguments lacks smooth integration. Strengthening the variety and natural flow of cohesive ties would enhance the overall structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrases such as 'common platform', 'distinct nationality', 'rigorous competition', and 'currency exchange rates'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing throughout the text, such as 'take participate' instead of 'participate', 'winner country' instead of 'winning country', and 'attracts another people' instead of 'attracts other people'. While these lexical errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the vocabulary score from reaching a higher band. Developing greater precision in collocations and word forms will elevate the lexical quality.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at multi-clause structures such as 'While others argue that these events create competition...' and '...where anyone can take participate and enjoy the games despite having a distinct nationality.' There are several errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('support for former statement', 'over other nation'), incorrect verb forms ('take participate'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('the proponents... holds'). Although these errors are present, they are not excessive and rarely impede communication. Incorporating a wider variety of error-free complex structures and refining control over articles and prepositions will help achieve a higher level of accuracy.
