Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent decades, there have been considerable debates about whether international sports events develop rivalry or friendship between two countries. While some argue that international events develop good relations between two opposing countries, others believe that these events create war between them. In my opinion, these events like the Olympics or the World Cup bring countries together because international events can be more effective in terms of economic growth and social relations for both nations.
On the one hand, some people believe that international competitions like the Olympics and the Football World Cup are beneficial to their economy and social affairs. This is because international events bring two different countries together, which develop their nations through employment, business and standard of living. For example, these events provide opportunities between countries, like welcoming visitors, hiring new employees, transportation facilities, and import- export of goods and services between those two countries has increased. As a result, international events are highly profitable for those two countries in terms of economic and social bonds.
On the other hand, those who argue that international events create competition between two countries can develop issues because of the win and loss of the games. International events are a form of competition between two opposing nations through games, which can evoke emotions towards their own country. For instance, all games have two sides: a win or a loss, because people from each nation can take these games seriously and then become rivals with the other country that won the match against them. However, I believe that this issue does not affect the nations in terms of financial growth, which it does for the two countries.
In conclusion, although international events create rivalry between two nations' people, I believe it can be beneficial in terms of economic growth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on international sports events and presenting a clear personal opinion. However, some ideas are under-developed or repetitive. For instance, the discussion on economic benefits in the second body paragraph relies on general statements such as 'opportunities between countries, like welcoming visitors, hiring new employees, transportation facilities' without sufficient explanation or specific real-world examples. The student takes a clear position throughout the essay, but the arguments lack the depth and extension required for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression through a standard four-paragraph structure. Information and ideas are generally organized logically, and the writer uses cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to signal the direction of the argument. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun reference in the final body paragraph ('financial growth, which it does for the two countries'), which slightly disrupts the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'considerable debates', 'economic growth', and 'rivalry'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing throughout the text, such as 'create war between them' instead of conflict or hostility, and 'win and loss of the games'. While these occasional errors do not impede communication, they reflect a limited precision that prevents the lexical score from rising further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with the student attempting complex structures like relative clauses and conditional-style reasoning. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omissions and prepositions inside grammatical patterns ('develop issues because of the win and loss'), but these errors are infrequent and rarely impede communication. The majority of the sentences remain clear, showing a satisfactory control of basic grammatical structures.
