Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many individuals assume that international sports matches is the best strategy to bring countries together, namely The Olympics or the Football World Cup. However, some think that these tournaments generate competition, not friendship, between countries. While I acknowledge that these events generally bring nations together despite competition. I this essay I will discuss both points and explain why.

One major advantage of these tournaments is they bring countries close together, it might be in several ways. Firstly, when different nations sit together in a single roof they exchange their cultures which results friendship between international fans. For instance, during the cricket world cup between Pakistan and India, fans of both countries sit together exchange their cultures in the stadium and sometimes they became the best friends. Furthermore, Mutual respect through the sportsmanship has been made, which means different players share their experiances that helps in their professional life.

Nevertheless, Sometimes these events creates rivalry between countries. Initially, these matches results excessive national pride means strong national pride makes winning extremely important. That makes huge pressure on teams from the fans because they proud their nation and expect to win. For example, during Pakistan India match fans proud thierselves and cheers the team which makes pressure on both teams to conquer. Moreover, sometimes it cause arguments and hostility between fans and they insult teams or blame referees after losing.

In conclusion, I acknowledge that sometimes rivalry creates tension although, I believe that these type of international tournaments bring nations close together and they can share their cultures or traditions with eachother.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on international sports events—whether they unite countries or create competition and hostility—and clearly presents the writer's own opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the points regarding cultural exchange and national pride are relevant, some ideas remain under-developed or briefly stated, such as the claim about professional life benefits which lacks elaboration. The position is generally clear throughout, but the reasoning would benefit from deeper extension and more fully fleshed-out supporting examples to reach a higher level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical organisation. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint, and the conclusion. Progression is visible, moving smoothly from the benefits of tournaments to the drawbacks of rivalry. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, seen in repetitive sentence openings like 'Furthermore' and 'Moreover', and occasional referencing issues such as unclear pronoun links. To reach the next level, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices without over-relying on basic conjunctions, ensuring seamless transitions between sentences and ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'excessive national pride', 'sportsmanship', and 'hostility'. However, there are notable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word formation that prevent a higher score. Examples include 'international sports matches is the best strategy' instead of 'method' or 'way', 'sit together in a single roof' instead of 'under a single roof', and 'fans proud thierselves' instead of 'take pride in themselves'. Spelling slips like 'experiances' and 'thierselves' also occur, though these lexical errors do not severely impede overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures are frequently undermined by grammatical errors. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'international sports matches is', missing articles, and incorrect prepositional patterns. Punctuation errors are also present, including a run-on sentence fragment in the introduction ('between competition. I this essay I will...'). While simple sentences are generally understandable, errors in grammar and punctuation occur with some regularity. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over complex sentence patterns, article usage, and basic agreement rules to ensure fewer disruptions for the reader.
