Student answer (Band 6.0)
`In today's world, popularity of sporting events have been growing substantially. On the one hand people belive that these events unite the competing nations and on the second hand people belive that they bring the feeling of competiveness and no friendly intentions. In this essay I will discuss oboth these views and give my opinion on why I prefer the former view.
The first group of people believes that global sporting events bring countries closer because as humans we genuinely love watching talented people compete. People want to be amazed by exceptional performances and see the limitless nature of us humans. This brings the spark to unite people through genuine curiousity. In addition, these events opens a pathway to new experinces. The love of the game can help people understand a country's food, culture and language.
The second group of people instead believes that these events bring competition because of the rewards involved. The trophies and medals have emotions clinged to them. Rewards bring competition as its the way for their country to show others their accomplishments. Additionally, people for the love of their country can feel that their country is better as they tend to understand the sacrifices being faced just so their country can represent itself.
In the end, I believe humans are genuinely curious creatures who love to share their love for great performances with each other put up by different countries in events where the borders don't matter. Although competiotion does come in the picture because of the patriotism, I belive healthy competition is what matters in such sporting events.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on international sporting events and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. For instance, you explain how events like the Olympics unite nations through a shared love of performance and culture, while also acknowledging the perspective that they can foster intense competition and patriotism. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. While the benefits of unity and cultural exchange are explored reasonably well, the points regarding competition and rewards in the third paragraph remain somewhat limited and under-developed. To reach the next level, all main ideas would need to be extended with deeper explanations and more fully realized supporting arguments throughout the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, traditional four-paragraph structure. Information and ideas are logically sequenced, moving from an introductory overview and stance to separate body paragraphs discussing each opposing view, followed by a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition', and 'The second group of people instead', which demonstrates that you can guide the reader through your arguments. To bridge the gap to a higher band and achieve a fully logical progression throughout, referencing and transitions could be smoother and less mechanical, avoiding formulaic phrasing and ensuring that every cohesive link feels entirely natural and integral to the flow of the discussion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and topic-specific terminology such as 'international sports events', 'competing nations', 'exceptional performances', and 'patriotism'. Communication is generally clear, but there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score, including 'belive' instead of believe, 'competiveness' instead of competitiveness, 'oboth' instead of both, 'experinces' instead of experiences, and the awkward collocation 'emotions clinged to them'. These inaccuracies show that while your vocabulary range is functional, greater precision and correct orthography are needed to consistently control less common lexical items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as 'In addition, these events opens a pathway to new experinces' and 'Although competiotion does come in the picture because of the patriotism, I belive healthy competition is what matters'. There are several errors in grammar, agreement, and punctuation throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement errors ('popularity of sporting events have been growing' and 'events opens'), missing articles, and spelling mistakes that impact punctuation and word forms. Despite these errors, they rarely impede overall communication. To move up to the next band, you would need to produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences and demonstrate more consistent control over complex grammatical structures.
