Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is believed by number of people that, a good way to get nations together through international games and tournaments like The Olympics or the World Cup Football, while others think that it develops a sense of competition rather than friendship among nations. I believe, although international sports have competition to win as everyone is supporting their own country, it brings people around the world to a common ground to enjoy and celebrate the event.
On the one hand, every team have their fans who supports their country's team. While playing everyone is cheer for their team to win against oppponent country, which causes a sense of enemy towards opposite team. For example, there was an argument among fans that either Argentina or Spain was best in recently held 2026 FIFA World Cup, which leads to fight between fans.
On the other hand, people from all over the globe gather together to watch and enjoy the games, along with exchanging their thoughts about the events, which helps them to know each other better and to get together. For instance, fans of various national teams gather together in India for Cricket World Cup in 2022 from different countries. So, I think supporting own country and having competition does not mean that it aparts countries away, a sense of friendship and togetherness comes from a game that is in common to everyone.
In conclusion, although few people think that international sports do not bring nations together and cannot build friendship because of competition among teams, but I believe that, despite having competition among teams, it helps to bring people together as long as everyone is taking it as a game and enjoying it as a common festival.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on international sports events and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the second and third paragraphs introduce relevant arguments regarding competition, fan friction, and cultural exchange, some points remain under-developed or supported by unconvincing examples, such as referencing a 2026 FIFA World Cup argument or a 2022 Cricket World Cup in India. To reach a higher band, the student needs to extend and support all main ideas with more accurate, detailed, and realistic examples, ensuring that the exploration of both perspectives is balanced and fully elaborated throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear central topic. Paragraphing is used logically to separate the introduction, the two body paragraphs exploring opposing views, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'For instance' are employed to guide the reader through the text, successfully reflecting the lower end of the band seven descriptor while still retaining some mechanical features typical of band six. Nevertheless, referencing and referencing markers are occasionally imprecise, as seen in vague pronoun links or slightly repetitive transitional phrasing, which prevents the logical progression from being entirely smooth and natural throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their thoughts on sports and international relations. The student attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'cultural exchange' implied concepts or phrases like 'common ground' and 'togetherness', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form. Examples include 'every team have their fans', 'oppponent country', and 'aparts countries away'. Spelling and morphological slips are present, such as 'oppponent', but they do not severely impede communication. To improve this criterion, the student must broaden their lexical range and refine their precision when selecting and spelling less common terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to handle multi-clause structures such as 'I believe, although international sports have competition to win as everyone is supporting their own country, it brings people...'. However, there are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly involving subject-verb agreement ('every team have', 'which leads to'), article usage ('the Football World Cup', 'for Cricket World Cup'), and missing prepositions or awkward prepositional patterns. Although these errors occasionally catch the reader's attention, they rarely impede overall communication. A greater variety of error-free complex sentences and stricter control over basic grammatical rules are needed to advance.
