Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the main parts of the task by discussing both views—that international sports events bring countries together and that they create competition—along with a personal opinion. However, the ideas are limited and under-developed, which keeps the response at this level. For instance, the discussion on cultural exchange in the first body paragraph mentions food, language, and tradition, but these points are not fully extended or supported with specific examples from the Olympics or World Cup. Similarly, the counterargument regarding competition is brief and lacks depth, only stating that people want their team to win and experience failure. The writer does attempt to present a clear position throughout the essay, but the lack of thorough explanation and extension prevents the ideas from being more fully realized.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation in the essay, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, and the writer attempts to sequence ideas logically. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the arrangement feels somewhat disjointed. Cohesive devices are either inadequate or repetitive, with simple connectors like 'on the one hand', 'on the other hand', and 'to conclude' used to structure the text, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is frequently faulty. For example, referencing is not always clear, as seen in phrases like 'this thing enhance their interest', where the exact antecedent is ambiguous. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks smooth transitions, making the overall flow mechanical and sometimes difficult to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common topics related to international events, culture, and business. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling throughout the essay that cause some difficulty for the reader. Examples of inaccurate word choices and forms include 'prespective' instead of perspective, 'visite' instead of visit, 'languge' instead of language, 'competion' instead of competition, 'failiur' instead of failure, and 'stretagy' instead of strategy. Additionally, collocation is often unnatural, such as 'make country's good relation' or 'competition behavior'. These lexical inaccuracies and frequent spelling errors restrict the precision of the argument and impede smooth communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response shows a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences or attempts at complex sentences that are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors relating to verb forms and tenses, subject-verb agreement, missing articles, and prepositions within grammatical patterns. For example, sentences often lack necessary auxiliary verbs or correct inflection, such as 'these type event provide people's opportunity' and 'international games is good way'. Punctuation is also problematic, with sentences running together without proper capitalisation or terminal punctuation in places. These frequent grammatical errors cause significant strain and difficulty for the reader in interpreting the intended meaning.
