Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that international games events like The Olympics or The Football World Cup can be an important path for bringing friendship between different nations, while others believe that only competition is built by these events and its not benificial for building good relation. This essay will discuss both views before presenting my own opinion.

On the one hand, one main reason for these events can create good relationship is that players may develop a healthy work relationship among them when they gather at any competition. This is because participants of all countries have similarities in their goals and passion, which may lead them to share their ideas with each other and they can become good friends. For instance, these events provide a platform for players to share their contact details with each other and remain in contact after the event, which may build a friendship among them. Therefore, it is understandable why many people support this view.

On the other hand, some people argue that these events do not develop a good relation and only create competition. One important reason is that every team member want to win. In addition, every country team want to win, due to which, they try to lose the other team with every possible method. In other words, they may adopt any harmful strategy , which can create conflicts. For instance, if any team member do something intenstionally which makes other team to lose their points, the negative relationship will be develope..For these reasons, I believe that this view is more correct.

In conclusion, although these events have some advantages but I belive that the view that these events are not good for friendships is more approachable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on international sports events and providing a clear personal opinion. The writer establishes a position in the introduction and maintains it through to the conclusion. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the first body paragraph touches upon players sharing contact details and building friendships, but this point remains somewhat limited and under-developed rather than being fully extended with deeper elaboration. The second body paragraph explores the competitive aspect and potential conflicts, yet the arguments regarding teams trying to defeat opponents with harmful strategies are repetitive and lack robust supporting examples. Despite these limitations in development, the overall response successfully covers the prompt requirements to a sufficient degree.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout the text. The writer introduces the topic, examines both perspectives in separate body paragraphs, and concludes with a definitive summary of their viewpoint, showcasing that paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as "On the one hand", "On the other hand", and "In conclusion". However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes mechanical or slightly faulty. For example, the transitional phrases and sentence links occasionally feel repetitive, and referencing within sentences (such as pronoun usage in relation to teams) lacks absolute clarity. These traits place the response firmly in the middle band for this criterion, reflecting adequate structural organization alongside some mechanical cohesive ties.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to communicate basic ideas about international sports and competition. The writer attempts less common vocabulary, such as "benificial", "participants", "similarities", and "strategies", but this is accompanied by noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and word formation. For example, spelling errors like "benificial" and "intenstionally" appear, and word-choice slips such as "games events" instead of sporting events or "lose the other team" instead of defeat opponents occur. While these errors do not seriously impede overall communication, the presence of frequent lexical slips and a somewhat limited control over collocations restrict the vocabulary score to this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to construct varied sentences with subordinate clauses, such as "This is because participants of all countries have similarities in their goals...". However, there are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Issues include subject-verb agreement discrepancies, such as "every team member want" instead of wants, incorrect prepositions or verb patterns like "bringing friendship between", and punctuation lapses, such as missing spaces after commas and periods. Despite these errors, the structures used do not severely impede communication, and the sentence patterns are sufficiently varied to meet the expectations of this band level.
