Student answer (Band 6.0)
International sporting events have become a global phenomenon, bringing together athletes and spectators from different countries and cultures. However, it a matter of debate whether these events contribute to strengthen the ties and relations between countries or Instead, they foster envy and jealousy among sportsmen and supporters and bitter the bilateral relations between countries. I believe these events generally not only bolster the relations among citizens but also contribute to enhance the infrastructure and economy of countries.
On the one hand, supporters of the first view argue that thorough these events, different countries's citizens get the chance to encounter with others and spend quality time together. Consequently, several sterotypes and frivolous claims about the other countries have been broken down and the relations have been restored and rienforced.
Moreover, The strong relations generally help to understand the strenghts and weaknesses of others.
On the other hand, many people believe that these events play the integral part to jeopardise the relationship and the unity of people around the world as they get too much involved and attached to their team and consider the other teams as their rivals and enemies. Subsequently, this may change their behaviour and attitudes towards the other players and their supporters. At times, this animosity against the opposing team can escalate into massive fights and violent scuffles among supporters over petty issues. However, such incidents are relatively rare so it is better to overlook these incidents.
In conclusion, even though some events create competion occaissonally and turned into voilence rarely, I believe these international events are essential to spread unity and bolster the bilateral relations among countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—that international sports events unite countries versus the idea that they create competition and rivalry—while also providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas varies across the essay. While the first body paragraph touches upon breaking down stereotypes through cultural contact, the explanation remains somewhat generalized, stating simply that citizens 'get the chance to encounter with others'. Similarly, the second body paragraph outlines how fans can become overly attached to their teams and escalate minor issues into violent scuffles, but this point could have been extended with more specific examples. Despite some under-developed supporting details, the main requirements of the task are adequately covered, reflecting a competent approach to the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression of ideas from the introduction through the balanced body paragraphs to the final conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct sections for the introduction, the two opposing views, and the concluding stance. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, some referencing and cohesion within sentences feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on transitional phrases like 'Moreover' and 'Subsequently'. Pronoun referencing is generally functional, but overall cohesion occasionally lacks the flexibility and seamless integration characteristic of higher band levels.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to discuss the topic of international sports. The writer attempts to use less common items such as 'phenomenon', 'jealousy', 'stereotypes', and 'animosity'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word formation throughout the text. Examples include phrases like 'contribute to strengthen' instead of 'contribute to strengthening', 'encounter with others' rather than 'encounter others', and spelling slips such as 'sterotypes', 'rienforced', 'competion', 'occaissonally', and 'voilence'. Fortunately, these lexical errors and spelling mistakes do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting multi-clause structures such as 'I believe these events generally not only bolster the relations among citizens but also contribute to enhance the infrastructure'. Control over grammar and punctuation is mixed, resulting in some errors that persist throughout the text. There are issues with verb forms and infinitives, such as 'contribute to enhance' instead of 'contribute to enhancing', articles ('play the integral part' instead of 'play an integral part'), and awkward prepositions or structural phrasing like 'it a matter of debate'. Punctuation and capitalization errors also occur, such as capitalizing 'The strong relations'. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede overall communication.
