Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this modern era, many international sports events are happening around the globe, which plays the major part to bring the other countries together and give them opportunity to showcase their skills. Some of them considered it amazing, while few thinks this can cause riots between countries. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe international sports generally bring countries together.

On the one hand, major competition between countries can create intense competition between the countries. Athletics and supporters often have strong national pride, which can sometime lead to rivalry and disagreements. During important matches, fans may become overly passionate and develop negative attitudes towards opposing teams. For example, last year there was Cricket World Cup between India and Pakistan and people become so enthusiastic after India won and come on roads and blocking all the traffic, whereas the supporters of loosing team start bashing there tv's and other houshold things which creates very intense atmosphere around the globe and tension among supporters.

On the other hand, International sports provide an oppertunity for people from different cultural background to intereact and develop mutual respect. Athletes compete according to common rules, while spectators from around the world gather to celebrate their shared interest in sports. This can help to maintain the decorum of the sports events. The Olympic Games, for instance, bring together athletes from a large number of countries, allowing them to form friendships and share experiences beyond the boundaries of their respective nations.

In my opinion, although international sporting events can produce rivalry, their overall impact is more positive because they encourage international interaction and cultural understanding. Competition is an essential part of sport, but it does not necessarily prevent friendship. In many cases, healthy competition can actually create respect between athletes and countries.

In conclusion, international sports events may sometimes increase competition and national rivalry, but they are ultimately a powerful way of bringing people and countries together. Their ability to promote cultural exchange, friendship and mutual respect makes them a positive force in international relations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt well, presenting a clear position throughout the essay. The introduction successfully outlines both sides of the debate and clearly states the writer's opinion. Both the arguments supporting the view that sports create rivalry, exemplified by the Cricket World Cup mention, and the opposing view focusing on cultural interaction and the Olympic Games, are relevant and extended. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in the body paragraphs, and some supporting ideas could have been further elaborated to reach a higher level of development. Overall, the task is answered thoroughly with well-chosen examples from the writer's own knowledge.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with a well-defined introduction, followed by balanced body paragraphs addressing both views and the personal opinion, and concluding with a concise summary. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In my opinion' are used flexibly to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is managed effectively, though referencing and transitions between sentences occasionally feel slightly mechanical, such as the transition into the example about the India and Pakistan match, preventing the cohesion from feeling entirely natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'national pride', 'cultural exchange', and 'mutual respect'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and spelling that reflect this level. For instance, phrases like 'plays the major part to bring' contain unnatural prepositions, and words like 'oppertunity', 'intereact', 'loosing', and 'houshold' show noticeable spelling and word form errors. Despite these slips, meaning remains clear throughout, and the vocabulary is sufficient to allow some flexibility in discussing the topic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures with moderate success. There are frequent error-free sentences, showing a reasonable level of control over basic grammar. However, a number of grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, subject-verb agreement, and pluralisation, such as 'many international sports events is happening', 'few thinks', 'people become so enthusiastic', and 'start bashing there tv's'. Punctuation is generally handled adequately, and while these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication or cause difficulty for the reader.
