Student answer (Band 5.5)

There has been a debate about the competetive nature of some international sports events. Many people argue that global sports such as The Olympics or The Football world cup helps to develop stronger relationship between countries, whereas others argue it increases rivalry between nations. This essay will discuss both the views before presenting my own opinion of various benefits of such events in getting countries together.

One one hand, supporters of benefits associated with international sporting games think that this approach build a strong companionship between different countries. Players from different countries when play against each other, they develop in such huge games develop strong sense of sportsman spirit even if other team loses. This environment strengthens their bond and co-operation between differnt players on and off field. For instance, the recent football world cup had several nations participating together, where each and every team supported one another in a cheerful way, thus enhancing the team spirit and confidence. I completely agree that such sporting games not only improves global conflicts but also enhances co-operation and a sense of belonging among differnt players.

Conversely, other argue that players from different nation exhibit considerbale amount of rivarly and increased conflict in the rage of losing the game. For instance, in recent cricket match bewteen Japan and India in Olympics gained considerable popularity because of negative behaviour of some players on field.

To sum up, although different nations during international sports exhibit aggressive behaviour towards one another, I majorly feel that such sports boom friendship as well as cordial relationshiop between different nations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and state a clear preference for the unifying benefits, especially in the introduction and conclusion. The first body paragraph gives a relevant explanation of sportsmanship and cooperation, with the World Cup as an example. However, the opposing view is only briefly presented: the claim that rivalry can lead to conflict is not explained in depth, and the Japan–India example is unclear and does not show precisely how the event created conflict between countries. Some claims, such as sports improving “global conflicts,” are also difficult to interpret. Develop both sides more evenly and make your examples specific and directly relevant to relations between nations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding opinion. Transitions such as “whereas,” “Conversely,” and “To sum up” help readers follow the discussion, and your position remains consistent. This gives the essay a coherent progression. However, some links within sentences are awkward or unclear, particularly “Players from different countries when play against each other…” and the repeated “develop” in that sentence. The first body paragraph also shifts from explaining cooperation to asserting that sport improves global conflicts without a clear connection. Clarify these links and use referencing more precisely to make the progression smoother and less dependent on signposting phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “rivalry,” “sportsman spirit,” “co-operation,” and “cordial relationship,” and the reader can generally understand your main points. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “competetive,” “differnt,” “considerbale,” “rivarly,” and “rage of losing.” Some combinations are also unnatural or unclear, such as “improves global conflicts” and “sports boom friendship.” These issues make parts of the argument difficult to interpret, particularly in the paragraph about competition. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for discussing international relations and sporting events; choose precise expressions rather than combining familiar words in unusual ways.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause in the introduction and a concession in the conclusion. The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence construction and agreement occur often enough to affect clarity. For example, “global sports … helps” has a plural subject with a singular verb, while “this approach build” also needs subject–verb agreement. The sentence beginning “Players from different countries when play against each other” is missing a clear grammatical structure, and “other argue” and “different nation exhibit” have agreement problems. Practise building complex sentences around a clear subject and verb, and check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries during revision.
