Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that international sports touranments are the best approach to strengthen the relationship between contries. However, others, including me, argue that it can create rivilary among nations.

On the one hand, sports events among different countries provide players with an opportunity to understand about others culture and language. This is beacuse when they play together they share thoughts, which allows them to learn about their cultural values and native tongue. The more international players play tournaments with other countries, the more they are likey to develop a better understanding about each other. Subsequently, it would facilitates the relationship beetween countries. For example, a famous cricket player revealed in his interview that he can speak many foreign languages beacuse played so many international games.

On the other hand, others believe that international games can create competition among sportsmen because they represent their countries and can use tricks to win games, such as abusive language and body shaming. This will not only lead to unnecessary competition but also weak the relationship between countries. For example, last year, in the international football event teams involved in the physical fight due false comments made by some players. Due to this, officials of both countries had strong arguments.

In my opinion, global sports tournaments can excerbate existing problem between nations due to harsh commenting and provoking each other. Instead of organizing sports events to develop better relationships, authories should focus on international tourism.

In conclusion, although world athletic games might bring countries to some extent, I strongly believe that it can create serious issues and competition among them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear opinion: the first body paragraph explains how players can learn about other cultures, while the second argues that hostile behaviour can damage relations. Your conclusion reinforces your position that competition may create serious problems. These points are relevant, but they are not developed equally or in enough detail. The example about a cricketer learning languages supports cultural exchange, though it does not clearly show how this improves relations between countries. The football example is also vague, with no specific event or explanation of its wider impact. Your suggestion that authorities promote tourism is introduced without being connected to the discussion. Explain the mechanisms and use more precise supporting examples to develop the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement and also shows some control of paragraphing. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical, with repeated references to “countries” and “international” events, and some links between claims are not fully clear. For instance, the cricket-player example follows the point about cultural understanding but does not explicitly connect language learning to stronger national relationships. The final tourism suggestion also feels abrupt. Use more precise referencing and explain how each example supports the preceding idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “cultural values,” “native tongue,” “physical fight,” and “provoking each other,” and you attempt some less common expressions such as “exacerbate existing problem.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “touranments,” “contries,” “rivilary,” and “excerbate.” Some collocations are also inaccurate or awkward: “understand about others culture,” “weak the relationship,” and “harsh commenting” do not express the ideas naturally. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your main argument, but they limit precision and fluency. Check spelling carefully and learn common word partnerships, such as “understand other cultures,” “damage relations,” and “hostile remarks.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a comparative structure (“The more… the more…”) and a conditional clause (“when they play together”). Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “it would facilitates” has an incorrect verb form, and “because played so many international games” is missing a subject. There are also problems with articles, plurals, and agreement in phrases such as “others culture” and “existing problem.” The sentence beginning “This is because” is understandable, but its clause structure could be controlled more carefully. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, verb forms after modal verbs, and complete clauses, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
