Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Big events like The Olympics or the Football world Cup are good way to end the differences between countries, whereas many people argue that these events give birth to unhealthy competition rather than fellowship between nations. I think that these events bring people together from all around the world, and can generate healthy competition.

Firstly, events like The Olympics are massive, and athletes from all around the world come together to represent their countries. These competitions are closing down the differences between nations, and are bringing them closer than ever before. For example, in these events athletes come together and stay with each other while playing, and because of this they become friends with each other. In the long term these small steps of friendship can lead end the war between nations.

On the other hand, there are many people who think that these competitions can create friction between nations because sometimes while playing games players get hyper which can lead to fights or arguments on the field. For example, when ever the Football Cup games are played, there always news next day about bar fights and brawls. Sometimes poeple take these games very seriously which is not right due to this there are always fights and arguments happening between people.

In the conclusion, I think these games are very good way of bringing all nations together, and it is everyone's responsibilty that these games shouldn't be taken very seriously and played with healthy competition while respecting eachother. Moreover, people should always consider these events like friendly games.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear opinion: international events can unite people and encourage healthy competition. The two body paragraphs give relevant reasons, including athletes forming friendships and spectators becoming involved in fights. However, these ideas are not equally developed. The claim that small friendships can “lead end the war between nations” is a very broad conclusion without explanation, while the opposing view relies mainly on brief references to arguments and bar fights. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely how sporting contact can build understanding, and support the risks with a specific, relevant example. Your conclusion restates your position and adds a recommendation about respectful competition, though this could be linked more directly to the arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. “Firstly” and “On the other hand” make the shift between perspectives easy to follow, and the examples generally appear beside the ideas they support. This coherent arrangement meets the task well. To make progression more controlled, avoid repeating the same point in slightly different forms: the second body paragraph mentions fights, arguments, and brawls several times without adding much development. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “because” and “For example.” Use a wider range of links and make references more precise so that each sentence advances the discussion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “athletes,” “represent their countries,” “friction,” and “healthy competition.” However, the range is limited and several choices or collocations are noticeably inaccurate, which makes some phrases awkward: “give birth to unhealthy competition,” “closing down the differences,” and “lead end the war.” There are also spelling errors such as “poeple” and “responsibilty,” as well as inconsistent capitalisation in “Football world Cup.” Aim for more natural, precise expressions and check spelling carefully. Replacing repeated general words such as “games” with context-appropriate terms like “matches,” “events,” or “competitions” would also improve variety.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast structure with “whereas” and a conditional clause beginning “which can lead to.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “are good way” needs an article, and “these competitions are closing down” uses an unsuitable tense for a general claim; “can lead end the war” is missing a grammatical link. There are also agreement and sentence-control problems in “there always news next day,” while the final sentence has a long, loosely connected sequence of clauses. Practise accurate articles, verb forms, and clause boundaries, then proofread each sentence for a complete and consistent structure.
