IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

According to some individuals , nations are becoming friendly as international supports are considered as a prominent reason for the enhancement of the closeness among them . while , rest of all are against this trend because they thought that it entails the competition , boosts enemy like sense in all parts of the world . I belive that this statement is true so i will discuss both aspects in the the following paragraphs .

To commence with, firstly i would like to shed light upon its merits. Apparently, many events are conducted in the worldwide where host countrie's govenment bodies of start to give facilities to the players . Consequently, in return the guest players accept all the hospitality and it directly enriches the friedly envirement . For instance, as india was slave of white people once and their relations were to bitter but with games they start to tread each other in a good way. Moreover , these relations are not good for the sake of authorities as well as for the general public because in this way it opens the doors for anothers relations such as trade , hollywood etc.

On the flip side , sometimes if a game is conducted among countries enemy countries then people start to see one another as an enemy . For example , if cricket match is played between India and Pakistan in that case demographics from both sides want that their team should be win . as a result when game come closer to end result all audience shout to motivate their own playes. however , it make another team feel low if the huge crowd is from another coutry they just demotivate them so we cannot called it friedly in any way . additionally, may a times it cause fight among the viewrs because they take to a simple game on their ego if they loose an event .

to conclusion , in my perspective although these supports are good but also many evil things are emerged globally due to these. Most impotantly all need guidance and should view it as positive thing or as a source of building relations not to molist one another .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views: the first body paragraph explains how hospitality toward visiting players may improve relations, while the second describes rivalry and hostility, using India–Pakistan cricket as an example. Your opinion is present in the introduction and conclusion, where you say the events can build relations but also produce harmful effects. However, the position is not fully clear: “I believe that this statement is true” does not specify which view you support, and the conclusion does not clearly weigh the two sides. Several points, such as trade and “Hollywood,” are mentioned but not explained, and the historical example about India’s past is difficult to follow. Develop each example and state your view more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the benefits and drawbacks, and a conclusion. This helps the reader follow the two sides of the discussion. You also use signposts such as “To commence with,” “On the flip side,” and “To conclusion.” However, some linking is mechanical or inaccurate, and the progression within paragraphs is occasionally unclear. For example, the move from players’ hospitality to trade and “Hollywood” needs a clearer explanation of how one leads to the other. In the cricket paragraph, several ideas run together, making the sequence from audience support to demotivation and fighting harder to follow. Use fewer formulaic transitions and connect each example explicitly to its main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “hospitality,” “competition,” “relations,” and “demographics,” and some choices help communicate the discussion. However, word choice, spelling, and collocation errors are frequent enough to make parts difficult to understand. Examples include “international supports” for sporting events, “friedly envirement,” “enemy like sense,” and “molist one another.” Some expressions are also unnatural, such as “the enhancement of the closeness” and “the game come closer to end result.” Aim for accurate, natural phrases rather than elaborate wording. Proofread spelling carefully and learn common collocations for sport, rivalry, diplomacy, and international relations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “when,” and “if.” This shows an effort to express cause, contrast, and conditions. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and frequent errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “their team should be win” needs a correct verb form, while “it make another team feel low” has a subject–verb agreement error. The opening also contains a sentence fragment beginning “while,” and punctuation and capitalisation are inconsistent. Practise building accurate sentences with one main idea at a time, then check verb forms and agreement before adding subordinate clauses.
