Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is opined by some individuals that sports events like The Olympics,Football worldcup and international cricket matches are becoming more popular and they are bringing the countries together. However,on the other side, some people says that thesevents create competitions between them.In this essay , i will discuss both the perspectives and i agree with the later view.

There are some reasons why some people argue that international sports events are bringing the countries together..The first and foremost reason is that players of different countries get to know about each other. They are just in competition at the sports field. Moreover, in case of any pandemic or any emergency they are in hand in hand to help each other. For example, recently Nepal got effected by major disaster flood and many countries like India ,Bangladesh came forward to help them.

However, on the other hand there are some reasons why some people are in the favour of why international sports events are creating jealous and competition between the players and as well as the people .To begin with, in the stadium many international people are cheering for their favourite team players which sometimes lead to fight, bullying and jealousy as sport is a game of win and loss.Secondly, some sports like wrestling create a fight between the players which sometimes lead to physical injuries which is teally dangerous sometimes.

IFAn my opinion, there are many reasons why i believe that overseas game events are creating only a competition between the players.Firstly, sometimes competition makes them people as well as players aggressive which lead to some fights and physical injuries.Secondly, they are not only creating the jealousy at sports field but in the people who are watching these games online or on tv such as FIFA world cup.

In conclusion, i would like to reiterate that playing sports are only increasing competition between players ans people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and state your position, particularly in the introduction: “I agree with the later view.” The response also gives relevant examples, including countries helping Nepal after a disaster and spectators fighting over teams. However, the discussion is uneven and the reasons are not developed enough to fully support your conclusions. The Nepal example illustrates international cooperation, but its connection to sports events is not explained. The opposing view is also reduced mainly to jealousy, fights and injuries, without considering how competition might affect relations between countries. Your opinion is clear overall, but the conclusion’s claim that sports events are “only” increasing competition is stronger than the evidence presented. Explain the links and consequences more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, a paragraph giving your opinion, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “Moreover,” “However,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the broad direction. However, some linking is mechanical or repetitive: “However, on the other hand” introduces the same contrast twice, and “Firstly” and “Secondly” recur without always making the relationship between ideas clear. The paragraph about cooperation moves from players getting to know one another to disaster relief without explaining the connection. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as in “they are in hand in hand.” Use fewer formulaic transitions and make each sentence’s link to the paragraph’s main point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “international sports events,” “competition,” “jealousy,” and “physical injuries,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the reader pause. For example, “creating jealous” should be expressed as “causing jealousy,” while “overseas game events” is not a natural way to describe international sporting competitions. There are also spelling and word-form errors, such as “worldcup,” “teally,” and “ans.” Repeated use of “competition,” “players,” and “people” limits precision. Build a wider set of accurate collocations for cooperation, rivalry, spectators and international relations, and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “which” and “why,” and the overall meaning can usually be followed. However, control is inconsistent, and errors in agreement, sentence construction, articles and punctuation sometimes make reading difficult. For example, “some people says” should be “some people say,” and “these events create competitions” needs a more natural singular or uncountable construction. The sentence beginning “However, on the other hand there are some reasons why…” is structurally awkward, while “which sometimes lead to fight” has agreement and article problems. Capitalisation and spacing around punctuation are also inconsistent. Practise building accurate complex sentences, then proofread for subject–verb agreement, articles and sentence boundaries.
