Student answer (Band 4.5)
Internatinal sports events, such as the Olympic Games and the Football World Cup,are popular around the world. Some people believe that these events bring countries together, while others argue that they create competation rather than frienship. In my opinion, international sports events can promote unity and frienship, although they may also cause disagreements.
On the other hand, international sports events help bring people from different countries together. Athletes have the opportunuty to meet people from different cultures and learn about their traditions. Moreover, supporter from different countries can share their love of sports and develop frienships. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You introduce both viewpoints and state a clear opinion: international events can promote unity, although they may cause disagreements. The example of athletes competing while showing respect is relevant to the positive view. However, the response addresses the task only minimally: the opposing view is merely announced in the final sentence and is not explained, and your own position is not supported with developed reasons or examples. The discussion of supporters and athletes also remains brief. The required minimum length is not met, which contributes to the limited coverage of the task. To improve, explain how events can create rivalry or conflict, develop both sides with specific examples, and show how these points support your opinion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic paragraph structure: an introduction is followed by a paragraph about unity and a final sentence introducing competition. The opening also signals the two views, so the reader can identify the intended discussion. However, ideas are not arranged coherently overall because the second viewpoint is left undeveloped and the response ends without a conclusion. The repeated linker “On the other hand” is also unsuitable for introducing the first supporting paragraph after the introduction, and its repetition does not create a clear progression. Develop each viewpoint in a separate, complete paragraph, use linking phrases that show the relationship between ideas, and finish by restating your opinion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “international sports events,” “different cultures,” “traditions,” “competition,” and “conflict.” These choices make the general subject clear, and phrases such as “bring countries together” are appropriate to the task. However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling errors affect the presentation, including “Internatinal,” “competation,” “frienship,” and “opportunuty.” Some wording is also imprecise or awkward, such as “supporter from different countries” and “complete against one aonother.” Aim to check spelling carefully and use more precise collocations to explain the effects of sporting events, such as international cooperation, national rivalry, or diplomatic tension.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You show some control of basic sentence forms, and the opening uses a complex contrast with “while.” The sentence beginning “Although they may also cause disagreements” is also a useful attempt to express a concession, and the main meaning is generally understandable. However, the range is limited, with most ideas expressed in simple statements, and there are errors in sentence construction and punctuation. For example, “Athletes have the opportunity to meet people from different cultures and learn about their traditions” is followed by a run of text without a space after the full stop; commas are also repeatedly joined directly to the next word. The final sentence is incomplete as a discussion. Practise combining ideas with accurate subordinate clauses and check sentence boundaries and spacing.
