IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

International sports events like the football or cricket worldcup and The Olympics bring all the countries together on a single platform to compete for the title. Though it is a good way for them to interact with one another, some says these events create a sense of competition. In my opinion, these events result in more friendship among countries rather than rivalry.

When countries come together to compete for a trophy, their fans also travel to cheer for their home teams. As a result, the stands are shared by both the citizens of the teams, where during the match they exchange talks. This might lead to people maming friends from the other country, or learning more about their culture or traditions. Moreover, when atheletes also play together, they discuss their life journeys, their careers and might get close to share their personal lives as well. This results in friendship between the two atheletes, and hence the two countries.

However, in some instances when the match is at a crucial point or it is a battle between arch rivals, the spectators can engage in heated arguments. There also have been an instance in a match between Pakistan vs Afghanistan, where after Afghanistan lost its fans started to damange the chairs in the stands, and they also picked a fight there. Moreover, the players might also pick up a fight on the pitch, if the match is not turning in their favour and is a semi-final or final. This can also result in countries developing a sense of hatred among each other.

To conclude, even though fights can happen when the match is usually in a nail-biting stage, I believe these sports really help bring different countries together. Moving forward, the associations should focus on adding more and more countries as teams to these tournaments.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear opinion: international events create more friendship than rivalry. The two main body paragraphs also give relevant support, including fans interacting and the Pakistan–Afghanistan incident. This meets the task well, and the examples make your discussion concrete. However, the positive case is developed more fully through several possible benefits, while the negative side relies mainly on isolated incidents and does not explain how competition might affect relations more broadly. The conclusion repeats your position, but the suggestion to include more countries is not clearly connected to how this would strengthen unity. Develop both sides with more balanced explanation and make the final recommendation directly support your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the benefits and drawbacks, and a conclusion. The progression from fans’ interactions to athletes’ relationships is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Moreover,” “However,” and “To conclude” help readers identify shifts in argument. This gives the essay a coherent arrangement. At times, though, connections are somewhat mechanical, and some references are unclear: “the citizens of the teams” is imprecise, while “This results in friendship” does not clearly distinguish whether it refers to the athletes or the countries. The final recommendation also feels added rather than developed from the preceding points. Use more precise referencing and link each example explicitly to the paragraph’s main claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “arch rivals,” “heated arguments,” “nail-biting stage,” and “personal lives,” which helps convey both cooperation and conflict. The meaning is generally clear, but noticeable spelling and word-choice problems limit precision: “worldcup,” “maming,” “atheletes,” and “damange” are misspelled, and “exchange talks” is an unnatural collocation. Some expressions are also imprecise, such as “the citizens of the teams” and “adding more and more countries as teams.” These issues do not prevent understanding, but they make parts of the essay less fluent and controlled. Check spelling carefully and choose collocations that express the intended relationship more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “Though it is a good way for them to interact” and conditional phrasing with “if the match is not turning in their favour.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the paragraph structure supports readability. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “some says,” the subject and verb do not agree; “there have been an instance” has a number mismatch; and “when the match is usually in a nail-biting stage” has an awkwardly placed adverb that affects the sentence structure. There are also occasional article and phrasing issues. Review agreement, singular/plural forms, and sentence construction, while continuing to use varied clauses.
