Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There is an ongoing argument that the International sports events such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup often unites the participating nations while some believe that it creates unncecssary competetion between the countries. It seems like a debetable topic but in my opinion such events are necessary for people to develop strong relations with eachother.
Firstly, discussing the former viewpoint, the atheletes and the spectators from different countries assemble during such events where they learn about diverse culture and traditions by interacting with eachother. For instance, while training on field the athelets can observe their rivals and grasp positive things from it. Secondly, it unites fans from all over the globe who share same love and passion for the game and team they support. Sometimes it is possible that a person with different nationality supports an other team.
Additionally, it helps in improving the relationship betwwen the host nation and other participating countries as they work in cooperation with each other to make this kind of huge event a success. To elaborate, for a country hosting the Football World Cup for the first time, it can take help from other neighbouring countries to organise the event. Hence it can be beneficial towards developing healthy relations with other countries.
However, sometimes such tournaments also lead to violent riots between the supporters of different teams. This is because of passion and love towards one national team. Furthermore, the atheletes often feel pressurize to win for their country or else they are criticised heavily by their own people.
In my opinion, such tournaments brings more countries together than divide them and this is because it helps people make new friends irrespective of their nationality. Respectful competition allows the countries to grow and learn from eachother whithout feeling overwhelmed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and give a clear opinion: you argue that international tournaments generally bring countries together, while acknowledging riots and pressure on athletes as drawbacks. The examples about athletes learning from rivals, fans supporting teams across nationalities, and host countries cooperating are relevant. This meets the task well, but the two sides are not developed equally: the benefits receive several explanations, whereas the opposing view is mainly limited to supporter violence and athletes’ pressure. The hosting example is also hypothetical and could explain more clearly how cooperation builds lasting relationships. To strengthen the response further, develop the competition viewpoint with a specific example and explain how it affects relations between countries, while extending the supporting evidence for your own position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, paragraphs presenting benefits, a paragraph on drawbacks, and a concluding opinion. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “Additionally,” and “However” help readers follow the discussion, and the conclusion returns to your central position. This is coherent and the paragraphing is appropriate. At times, however, the linking is somewhat mechanical, and some references are not fully clear. For example, “it helps in improving the relationship” does not immediately identify whether “it” means the event or the host country’s cooperation. The ideas within the benefits section could also be grouped and connected more smoothly. Use fewer formulaic transitions and make links between each claim and its explanation more explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “participating nations,” “diverse culture and traditions,” “spectators,” “cooperation,” and “violent riots.” These choices make the subject clear, and phrases such as “irrespective of their nationality” show an attempt to express ideas beyond basic vocabulary. However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural combinations are noticeable, including “unneccssary,” “debetable,” “atheletes,” and “pressurize.” Some expressions, such as “share same love and passion” and “take help from,” are understandable but not idiomatic. Greater accuracy with spelling and collocation would make your vocabulary more precise and natural. Learn useful word partnerships in context and proofread carefully for spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “the team they support” and a conditional construction in “for a country hosting the Football World Cup for the first time, it can take help…”. Most ideas remain understandable, and errors rarely obstruct the message. Some grammatical inaccuracies persist, however. The opening says “events … often unites,” where the plural subject requires “unite”; similarly, “such tournaments brings” should be “bring.” In “a person with different nationality,” an article is needed, and “supports an other team” should use “another.” The sentence beginning “For a country hosting…” also has an unclear subject for “it.” Check subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence subjects, while continuing to use varied structures.
