Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people belive that having an international sport events like the football or the olympics world cup, can combine two different countries in a positive mind. While, others think this will get into competition, and make enemys. From my view, having competition is a healthy and positive effect on both countries. I will illustrate all the possible ways with brief example in the follwoing paragraph.

On the one hand, international sporting events provide an excellent opportunity for people from different cultures to interact and understand one another. Athletes travel from around the world to compete, allowing them to build friendships and learn about different traditions. Moreover, fans from different nations often gather in stadiums or watch matches together, sharing their excitement and passion for sports. For example, during the Olympic Games, athletes from countries with different political systems live and compete alongside one another in a spirit of mutual respect. Such experiences can reduce cultural misunderstandings and encourage peaceful relationships between nations.

On the other hand, some people argue that these events encourage excessive nationalism and hostility. Since countries compete to win medals or trophies, supporters may become aggressive towards rival teams and their fans. In some cases, disagreements between supporters can lead to arguments or violence. Furthermore, losing an important match may create disappointment and criticism among fans, while winning can sometimes encourage feelings of superiority over other nations. For instance, football matches between countries with a history of political tension can become emotionally charged, with supporters treating a sporting defeat as a matter of national pride. Therefore, international sports can sometimes increase rivalry rather than friendship.

From my point of view, international sporting events can create competition and occasionally lead to hostility, but I believe their positive effects are greater than their negative ones. They encourage cultural exchange, mutual respect, and cooperation among people from different backgrounds. As long as athletes and supporters respect one another, these events can play an important role in promoting global unity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both views and gives a clear opinion: you acknowledge that sporting events can create rivalry, but conclude that their benefits for unity are greater. Both sides are supported with relevant explanations, including cultural exchange among athletes and the possibility of hostility among rival supporters. The Olympic example helps illustrate cooperation, while the football example connects competition with national pride. This fits a response that covers the task and extends its ideas. To strengthen the discussion further, develop the examples with more specific detail and avoid broad claims such as “these events can play an important role in promoting global unity” without showing how this happens in practice.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall progression: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a conclusion that restates your position. Ideas within the main paragraphs are generally ordered logically, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “For instance” help guide the reader. The contrast between the two perspectives is easy to follow. Some cohesion is slightly mechanical, however, particularly the repeated paragraph-opening pattern “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” followed by “From my point of view.” The introduction also promises “all the possible ways,” which is broader than the discussion that follows. Use more varied transitions and make references between sentences more natural to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “cultural misunderstandings,” “mutual respect,” “excessive nationalism,” and “emotionally charged.” These phrases help express both cooperation and rivalry clearly. However, some spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, especially in the opening: “belive,” “sport events,” “enemys,” and “follwoing.” There are also awkward or imprecise expressions such as “combine two different countries in a positive mind” and “get into competition.” These do not prevent understanding, but they show that vocabulary control is not consistently accurate. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe events as bringing countries together or intensifying rivalry.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “Since countries compete to win medals or trophies…” and “As long as athletes and supporters respect one another…”. Most of the argument remains clear, and several sentences are well controlled. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly in the introduction: “having an international sport events” has an article and plural mismatch, and “While, others think…” uses punctuation incorrectly and leaves an awkward sentence opening. The sentence beginning “Many people believe…” also has an unnecessary comma before “can.” These issues are limited and do not usually impede communication. To improve, check agreement, articles, and punctuation, and revise the opening for complete, smoothly connected sentences.
