Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals argue that different international sports events are a good way to bring countries together, while others believe that these sports events bring competition between countries. In my opinion, I believe that these combined sports activities bring friendship and harmony among the nations.

Many people see these sports activities in a negative way because they are not flexible. There are a lot of people that don't know how to relax and unwind with games. They see every sports events as a competition because there is a price attached to it and they cannot seperate their feelings from the game. For example, during the last world cup tournament, Nigerians hated Belgium and wished them bad because belguim won them after their last match. Because of this, some people went on social media and were cursing and insulting them simply because they cannot seperate game feelings and normal emotions.

Nonetheless, there are certain individuals that sees the games as just a way of bringing different countries together. They see it as a way of bonding and expressing love with each other. To give an example, during the olympics, you will see different people supporting diverse countries that are not their home country simply because they love how the team play the game. As a result, they all cheer for those nations to win together with the indigenes thereby bringing harmony, collaboration and unity among the people. Moreover, playing with different countries allows the players to learn different tactics from each other since each countries have different ways of coaching and motivating their players. This in turn foster developments and innovations among the nations.

In conclusion, in as much as many individuals view international sports as a competition because of their rigidity, I believe that it is a good way of promoting peace, harmony and development between nations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear opinion in the introduction and conclusion: you argue that international events promote “friendship and harmony.” The response also gives relevant examples, including hostile reactions after a football match and spectators supporting teams from other countries. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The competition argument relies mainly on people being unable to separate sporting outcomes from personal feelings, while the friendship argument is supported with more explanation and an additional point about players learning tactics. Clarify how competition can create tension between countries, rather than only among fans, and explain the examples more precisely. This would make the discussion more balanced and the supporting ideas more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the opposing views, and a conclusion that restates your position. Linking expressions such as “For example,” “Nonetheless,” and “Moreover” help signal the development of ideas. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. In the first body paragraph, “because they are not flexible” does not clearly explain why people view the events negatively, and the shift from the World Cup example to social-media reactions could be more smoothly explained. The second body paragraph contains several ideas—supporting foreign teams, unity, and learning tactics—which would benefit from clearer links. Use more precise referencing and make each paragraph’s main point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of relevant vocabulary, including “bonding,” “harmony,” “collaboration,” “tactics,” and “innovations,” which helps express the topic. There are also attempts at less common phrasing, such as “separate their feelings from the game.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “a price attached to it” appears to mean a prize, “hated Belgium” is too strong for the point, and “foster developments” is unnatural. Spelling errors such as “seperate” and “belguim” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise, natural expressions and check spelling carefully; this will make your argument sound clearer and more controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “since,” and “as a result,” and your meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with subject–verb agreement and plural forms. For example, “there are certain individuals that sees” should use a plural verb, and “each countries have” should be singular in form. “Every sports events” also has a mismatch between the determiner and noun. There are some long sentences where punctuation and clause boundaries could be clearer, especially in the example about spectators cheering for other nations. Review agreement, singular and plural forms, and sentence punctuation while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
