Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this developing world, some people argue that Global sporting events such as The Olympics or Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. while others argue that these competitions create rivalry rather than friendship between countries. In this essay, I will discuss both the views and share my opinion on this.

To commence with, competing on international level promote culture exchange and mutual respect for each other. These events allow people from different countries to learn each other traditions and lifestyles. For example, during the Olympics, athletes from various nations meet, share experiences, and develop mutual respect. Also, they celebrate their shared passion for the sport, regardless of their nationality or language.

As a result, these events can strengthen international relationships and promote global unity.

On the other hand, sometimes these events lead to arguments or tension between the spectators. When teams compete against each other, the individual's from different countries also try to defeat opponents and pass bad words or show rivalry which gradually increase tension and arguments. To elaborate on this, during the FIFA World Cup, some supporters argue with fans of opposing teams when their national team loses. Consequently, instead of promoting friendship, these events can sometimes increase hostility and competition between nations.

In conclusion, Although such events helps to promote traditions and mutual respect for each other, Intense rivalry can sometimes lead to conflicts between supporters. Nevertheless, I believe that these events generally bring countries closer together by encouraging cultural exchange and friendly competition.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear opinion: the body paragraphs explain cultural exchange and the possibility of rivalry, while the conclusion says these events generally bring countries closer. The Olympics and World Cup examples are relevant, but the discussion of hostility is less fully developed: it focuses on arguments among supporters and does not explain clearly how this becomes competition between countries. The cultural-exchange point is also asserted more than explored. The response is 241 words, so it is 9 words below the required minimum; this limits the space available to develop and support your ideas. Add a little more explanation or a specific example to make both sides more balanced and convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion that restates your position. Linking expressions such as “On the other hand,” “As a result,” and “Nevertheless” help readers follow the argument, and the ideas generally progress logically. This shows effective organisation, though some connections are a little mechanical, and the opening phrase “To commence with” is less natural than a direct topic sentence. There is also a punctuation issue in the introduction, where “while” begins a new sentence after a full stop but is left lowercase. To strengthen cohesion further, use transitions selectively and make the relationship between supporters’ disputes and international rivalry more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “mutual respect,” “cultural exchange,” “rivalry,” “hostility,” and “international relationships.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and the examples are easy to understand. There are, however, some inaccurate or awkward collocations and word choices, such as “competing on international level,” “learn each other traditions,” and “pass bad words.” “The individual's” is also an unsuitable form in this context. These slips do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim for more idiomatic combinations, such as “compete at an international level,” “learn about one another’s traditions,” and “exchange insults,” while checking possessive forms and word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “when,” “which,” and “although,” and your meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries. For example, “competing … promote” should use a singular verb, while “these events helps” should use a plural verb. The phrase “on international level” needs an article, and the opening has a full stop before lowercase “while,” creating a punctuation problem. The sentence beginning “When teams compete” also shifts awkwardly from plural “teams” to singular “the individual's.” Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and punctuation, then proofread complex sentences to ensure their subjects and verbs remain consistent.
