IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Sports are a major source of entertainment and are enjoyed by all age groups of people across the world. Some believe they bring countries together in positive ways, while others say they create competition among nations. I will discuss both perspectives in the essay further. However, I believe that sports are the medium through which countries bond well and create a sense of friendship.
International competitions like the Olympics provide a platform where people forget the rivalries and celebrate sportsmanship. Audiences gather to watch the game and cheer unanimously for the person playing. People get so much involved in the game that they don't even bother to see who is competing with whom. Audiences of greater numbers appreciate a good game and not which nationality they belong to. I came across one such instance where I went to watch a cricket match between Australia and South Africa and i belong from a different country still it we went as it was a final match and what a game it was, gripped the audience till the last ball and it clearly proved that a good game is what people are more interested.
On the contrary, I feel that the competitive atmosphere somewhere leads to heated debates among people. We have seen many times that international games become the international topic of discussions on social media platforms and people ragebait eachother making the relations of nations worse. For an instance, the Football World Cup 2026 where the fans of two famous franchises got crazy over the game and went into major debates turning into a public riots where people came from differnt countries just for the game and fun, face a lot of troubles.
To conclude, even though the relations of countries sometimes are affected because of competitions, I still beileve that a healthy competition among two teams or opponents will always be a treat to watch and will make the bonds of nations better.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state a consistent opinion that international sport can foster friendship. The first body paragraph supports this with the example of watching a cricket final, while the second recognises that competition can provoke hostile debate. These points are relevant, but they are not developed equally: the first example mainly shows shared enjoyment among spectators, rather than clearly explaining how this brings countries together, and the claim that social-media arguments worsen relations between nations needs a clearer explanation. The World Cup example is also difficult to follow and does not firmly establish the consequences described. To strengthen the response, explain the link between each example and international relations, and develop the opposing view with a specific, credible illustration.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your position. Transitions such as “On the contrary” and “To conclude” help signal the stages of the discussion. However, some connections between ideas are unclear or mechanical. In the cricket example, the shift from your personal experience to the general claim about audiences is abrupt, and the long sentence beginning “I came across one such instance” is difficult to follow. The World Cup paragraph also moves quickly from online debate to public disorder without explaining the connection. Use clearer sentence boundaries and link each example explicitly to the point it supports; this would make the progression easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “sportsmanship,” “rivalries,” “competitive atmosphere,” and “heated debates,” which helps communicate both sides of the issue. Some less precise or unnatural expressions, however, reduce clarity: “audiences of greater numbers,” “people get so much involved,” and “making the relations of nations worse” do not sound natural in this context. There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “eachother,” “differnt,” and “beileve.” Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise language for the effects of competition would also help you distinguish ordinary disagreement from serious hostility without relying on broad claims.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “where” and “even though,” and the main ideas are generally understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless make parts of the response difficult to read. For example, “I belong from a different country still it we went” has an unclear clause structure, while “a public riots” has a number-agreement error. The sentence beginning “I came across one such instance” also runs several ideas together, and the final paragraph’s “I still beileve” uses an incorrect verb form. Break long sentences into clearer units, check subject–verb agreement and articles, and proofread punctuation and verb forms while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
