Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this contemporary world international sport such as The Olympics or Football World Cup attracts million of people from all around the world. This act as mediator to bring people closer by celebrating the wins together , or they simply become a fierce competition between people or countries.

On one hand, international sport becomes an opportunity to bring people from different culture together under one roof. It also help athletes to know other players background and hence can appreciate each other while competing with each other. Even, spectators can enjoy each other game while showing excitement or appreciation to each other team. For instance in 2018 Winter Olympics that happened in South Korea, it opened the gates for both North and South Korean Players , marching together towards the unified flag.

While on the other hand, if we see people can become intense toward their team and players make a fierce competition. In many cases fans and media view matches not just as a game or way of entertainment but as a way of superiority complex show casing a different attitude towards the game. It also arise political tension between countries to display dominance. One such instance was India Pakistan cricket match or The Ashes , where countries and players became so intense in the match , that they only agreed to play in neutral venues leading to no matches between them for a period of time.

In my opinion it has great positive effect rather than negative. It act as a way among player to gain more knowledge about their opponent and become more friendly with each other. It also encourage team work as well as it helps in respecting each other from different background. Which can lead in becoming a powerful way to increase friendship overall.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both sides of the discussion and give a clear opinion that international sporting events have a greater positive than negative effect. The examples—the Korean athletes marching under a unified flag and the India–Pakistan cricket rivalry—make the discussion relevant and help illustrate the contrasting views. This meets the task well, though the two sides are not developed equally: the benefits are explained mainly through athletes and spectators meeting, while the negative side would be stronger with clearer explanation of how rivalry damages relations between countries. Your conclusion repeats your position and gives reasons, but could draw the discussion together more fully. To strengthen the response, explain the consequences behind each example and make the link to international friendship explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding opinion. The contrast signposts “On one hand” and “While on the other hand” help readers follow the discussion, and the examples are placed alongside the relevant arguments. However, some connections feel mechanical or unclear. For example, “Even, spectators…” does not link smoothly to the preceding point, and “Which can lead…” is an incomplete concluding sentence rather than a clear continuation. The introduction also presents two possibilities without clearly previewing your own position. For stronger progression, use fewer formulaic transitions, connect each example directly to the claim it supports, and ensure each paragraph develops one central idea through to its consequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “fierce competition,” “political tension,” “dominance,” and “appreciation,” which helps communicate both cooperation and rivalry. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “under one roof” and “neutral venues.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “million of people,” “different culture,” “a way of superiority complex,” and “increase friendship overall” do not sound natural in context. These errors generally leave the meaning understandable, but they limit precision and flexibility. Aim to learn vocabulary in common word partnerships and check singular/plural forms and word forms; for example, describe events as fostering “international goodwill” rather than simply increasing friendship.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “while,” “if,” and “that,” and the main ideas remain understandable. However, some errors in agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries reduce accuracy. Examples include “This act as mediator” and “It also help athletes,” where the verb does not agree with the subject, and “different culture,” where a plural form is needed. The final “Which can lead…” is a fragment, while “It act” and “It also encourage” repeat agreement problems in the conclusion. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with spaces before commas and a comma splice-like pause in places. Review subject–verb agreement and practise joining dependent clauses to complete sentences; retain the complex structures but check each sentence for a clear subject and finite verb.
