IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that international sports play a vital role in bringing countries together while others believe it craetes a competition between different countries. I support the statement of bringing countries together and will elaborate it in this essay.
If we take an example of Olympics, we can clearly see that people from various countries irrespective of their language or region participate together in a same event. This not only gives wide exposure to the athletes but also provides them a courage to stand in front of an opponant from a different country. Ankit, an athlete from India who came from a very poor family, won a gold medal in 2024 and is now a celebrity and financially stable just because of international sports.
On the other hand, it also creates a non-friendly competition between countries as the one that lose, becomes emotionally demotivated. Social media is also playing a huge role as people make memes which hurt the sentiments of the citizens of that particular country getting trolled. To illustrate, after a Football World Cup between Spain and Brazil, Spanish people kept trolling and betraying Brazilians for more than 3 years. Now, Brazil is considering Spain as their competitor which destroyed the relationship between two countries.
To conclude, these kind of sports events should be encouraged with lots of precautions. These should be a strict rule that each and every country participating in the event should be respected irrespective of their performance.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views and state your position clearly: you support the idea that international sport brings countries together, while acknowledging that it can also create hostility. The examples about athletes competing together and online trolling are relevant. However, the first example mainly explains benefits to individual athletes rather than showing how countries become closer, and the claim about Spain and Brazil is not sufficiently explained or supported. Your conclusion offers a sensible recommendation, but it does not develop your opinion much further. The response is also six words below the required minimum, so it needs a little more development. Explain the effects of each example and make the link to relationships between countries explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “On the other hand” and “To conclude” help readers follow the discussion, and the main ideas are generally presented in a logical order. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some movement towards more flexible progression. However, links within paragraphs are sometimes abrupt: the example of an Indian athlete’s personal success does not clearly connect back to relations between countries, and the shift from social media to the Spain–Brazil claim needs more explanation. Use clearer referencing and add linking sentences that show how each example supports the paragraph’s central point.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “international sports,” “athletes,” “opponent,” “trolled,” and “sentiments,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “financially stable” and “emotionally demotivated.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “a competition” does not express the intended idea as naturally as “competition,” while “betraying Brazilians” does not fit the context of online mockery. Spelling errors such as “craetes” and “opponant” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural collocations and check spelling carefully; this will make your vocabulary more flexible and convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional opening (“If we take an example…”) and a relative clause (“the one that lose”). Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make the relationships between ideas less clear. For example, “the one that lose” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “in a same event” uses an incorrect article. The sentence beginning “These should be a strict rule” also has a faulty structure; write “There should be a strict rule.” Review agreement, articles, and sentence construction, especially when expressing general rules. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
