IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Nowadays some people think that sport competitions causes rivalry and negativity between countries, while others strongly believe these events make people from different places closer to each other.
On the one hand, actually, everyone hopes their country will beat others, because they feel pride for their nation when that happens. We can see how some fans threat to each other when their team lose, which is not a healthy behaviour and make a dammage in countries relationships.
On the other hand, during these competitions the world become closer phisically and culturally.
From my perspective, the sport events make our civilization more united.
People can intruduce the other world with their culture. Also, they have an opportunity to know other better.
For example, when the fans watch ice skating they can see the program of other skaters, listen their national music and discover their unique traditional dancing style.
Moreover, as we know, during these arrangements the tourism is increasing, therefore in the one country you can meet humans from the whole world and talk with them.
Even sportmen communicate with each other.
That is why I think that way, I fully bel
In conclusions, I strongly believe sport allows us to share our cultural habits and experience.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You address both views: the first body paragraph explains national pride and hostile fan behaviour, while the later paragraphs argue that events encourage cultural exchange and tourism. Your own position is stated clearly in “the sport events make our civilization more united” and repeated in the conclusion. However, the discussion is only partial and the ideas are under-developed. The point about rivalry is brief, and the example of ice skating illustrates cultural exposure but is not explained in enough detail to show how this builds friendship between countries. The response also falls 44 words short of the required minimum, limiting the space available to develop both sides. Extend each view with a specific example and explain its significance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic paragraph structure, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “From my perspective” help identify the main stages of the argument. However, progression is not consistently clear: the second side is introduced briefly, then the essay shifts to your opinion without fully developing that side first. Some links are mechanical or unclear, particularly “That is why I think that way,” and the unfinished phrase “I fully bel” interrupts the flow before the conclusion. The final paragraph repeats the central opinion rather than drawing together the two views. Organise the essay into a clear introduction, one developed paragraph for each view, and a conclusion, using references that make the links between ideas explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “rivalry,” “pride,” “culturally,” “tourism,” and “traditional dancing style.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, but the overall range is limited and several noticeable spelling or word-choice errors make parts less clear. Examples include “threat” where the intended meaning appears to be “threaten,” “dammage,” “phisically,” “intruduce,” and “sportmen.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “know other better” and “in the one country.” Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise expressions such as “hostile exchanges between fans” or “promote cultural understanding” would help you express the argument more clearly and flexibly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple sentences and longer structures, including the reason clause beginning “because” and the example introduced by “when.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. For example, “sport competitions causes” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “when their team lose” and “the world become” also need agreement. In “which is not a healthy behaviour and make a dammage,” the verb form does not match the subject. The sentence “Even sportmen communicate with each other” is grammatically incomplete as a supporting point, and “I fully bel” is unfinished. Practise checking agreement and verb forms, and complete each sentence before moving to the next idea.
