IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
People have different views regarding sports events. One section of society think that it is a good way to create friendship between countries by organizing international sports events. Whereas, others believe that organizing these events can create problems such as compitition between nations instead of firendship. I agree with first viewpoint.
On the one hand, there are two main reasons why some people believe that hosting sports events on international level can enhance bonding between nations. Firstly, when players share a same ground from different backgounds, they come to know about various skills such as cooperation and open mindedness. Sometimes, they help each other and cheerup for other team which create an essence of brotherhood. As a result, they become good friends and share this bond for long time. Moreover, playing games in other countries and communicating with other players vanishes the stereotypes which is a serious problem these days.
On the other hand, these events can create a feeling of competition between countries. To elaborate on this, players always play a game with a hope of win. They try their best to get this thing as a result of which they sometimes involve in fights and other negative comments. This can destroy the bonding between countries. For example, sometimes soprtsmen get involved in arguments due to smaller things which would become bigger issue.
In conclusion, although organising sports events on international level can create a competition between countries, I think that these events can help to strengthen the bond between counties because of the reasons which are mentioned above.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state your position clearly in the introduction (“I agree with first viewpoint”), then reaffirm it in the conclusion. The response gives relevant reasons for the unifying view, including players learning from different backgrounds and stereotypes being reduced, and it also explains how winning-focused competition can lead to arguments. However, some points are asserted rather than fully developed. For instance, the claim that players’ communication “vanishes the stereotypes” would be stronger with a clearer explanation or a specific example. The opposing view is also less fully supported: the example of arguments over “smaller things” remains general. Develop each main idea with a concrete illustration and explain its effect on relations between countries.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that returns to your opinion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow, while “Firstly” and “Moreover” help organise supporting points. This coherent structure is a strength. To make the links more flexible and precise, avoid relying mainly on formulaic transitions and clarify references between ideas. For example, “they sometimes involve in fights” follows a sentence about players, but the connection between competitive pressure and conflict could be explained more explicitly. The conclusion also repeats the introduction’s position without adding a concise synthesis of the two arguments.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “stereotypes,” “brotherhood,” “bonding,” and “competition,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “enhance bonding” and “essence of brotherhood,” though some combinations sound unnatural or imprecise. Noticeable spelling errors—“compitition,” “firendship,” “backgounds,” and “soprtsmen”—reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. Some wording is also vague, such as “get this thing” and “smaller things.” Aim for more precise collocations and proofread spelling; for example, describe players as “striving to win” and specify the kinds of disputes that may arise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including a conditional-style explanation (“when players share… they come to know”) and a result clause (“as a result of which…”). Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. For example, “One section of society think” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “a same ground” uses an incorrect article. In “which create an essence,” the verb does not agree with its subject, while “which is a serious problem” has an unclear reference. There are also awkward sentence boundaries, such as beginning “Whereas” as a separate sentence after the opening statement. Review agreement, articles, and relative-clause references, and combine contrasting clauses into complete sentences.
