Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many people argue that sport events of international level can create a sense of competition between nations, While other believe that it creates opportunities for people from diverse cultures to assimilate and enjoy. I believe that such events do encourage positive environment and a sense of cultural assimilation, also improves understanding between nations.
One reason why major sporting events such as The Olympics and the Football World Cup has the ability to bring people together from different cultures. When a country hosts The Olympics it welcomes deligates, officials, sportsmen and sportswomen, support staff from all the participating nations who might not share same cultures. Fans too, travel to the host nation to support and cheer for thier faviourite team. These visitors explore local shops, try new cuisines, talk to other fans and share their excitement, which helps in reducing the stereotypes. I believe this helps to bridge the gap between international audiance and spread awareness in a certain way.
On the contrary, some argue that events of such caliber can create a sense of competition rather than improving relations. Players, fans present at the venue and in the host nation, also on social media platforms, could become nationalists over a game or moment of the event. This brews criticism, which can take a form of an intense badgering and online hate. People would get into a heated arguement over a discussion about the sport. Moreover, we have seen these type of arguments resulting in a physical fight in a stadium, and verbal abuse over the internet.
In conclusion, while sporting events involving different nation do promote friendship and awareness about different cultures, it can also pose a negative effect to widening the gap between people having different opinion. In my opinion, such events have positive impact overall.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state a clear opinion: international events can encourage cultural understanding, although they may also provoke hostility. The examples of visitors meeting fans, trying local food and sharing excitement support the positive view, while online abuse and stadium fights illustrate the opposing view. This is relevant and gives the response a sound basis. However, the positive effects are explained more fully than the negative side, which is mainly described through arguments and abuse; explain more directly how competition between countries can damage relations. The conclusion repeats your position but could synthesise the discussion more precisely. More balanced development and specific explanation of the examples would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The progression from cultural contact to possible conflict is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the contrary” and “In conclusion” help readers navigate the argument. This organisation is effective, though some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “One reason why major sporting events…” begins as an incomplete sentence, and “This brews criticism” does not clearly identify what “This” refers to. The final sentence also shifts from “sporting events” to “it,” making the reference less precise. Use complete topic sentences and clearer links between each example and its point to make cohesion more flexible and natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “diverse cultures,” “stereotypes,” “bridge the gap,” “nationalists,” and “verbal abuse.” These choices help communicate both the social benefits and risks of international sport. There are also attempts at less common or formal expressions, but some are inaccurate or unnatural: “cultural assimilation” suggests adopting another culture rather than simply learning about it, while “intense badgering” is not a natural description of online hostility. Spelling errors such as “deligates,” “thier,” “faviourite,” “audiance,” and “arguement” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise collocations and check spelling carefully; this will make your vocabulary more controlled without requiring more elaborate wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including relative clauses and conditional phrasing, as in “who might not share same cultures” and “could become nationalists over a game.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. In the opening, “While other believe” needs subject–verb agreement and a plural noun; “it creates” also does not agree with the plural “events.” The sentence beginning “One reason why…” is incomplete, and “events … has” has an agreement error. Articles and number are also inconsistent in phrases such as “share same cultures” and “different nation.” Work on complete sentence construction, agreement, and articles while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
