IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

International Sports Events attracts millions of people around the world. While some pople believe these events are a way to bring countries together some people also argue that it will create competition among countries.

On one hand, in international sports events, athletes from different countries come together and they are able to experience the different cultures and lifestyles of other countries. For example, during the Olympic Games athletes from different countries play together they also compete but they also show respect for one another.

On the other hand, in international sports events, people from different countries compete with one another, and if one country loses, it may create a feeling of hatred towards the other country. Also some countries focus too much on winning medals for their countries rather than enjoying the sports and competition.

I believe international sports have more positive impact overall if competition is done just as competition. It will encourage teamwork, unity, and respect for one another. If competitiors behave responsibly then it will help them to foster positive environment and also help countries to come together.

In conclusion, competition should be done just for sake of enjoyment instead of taking it seriously and harming one another. It should help us to bring countries closer to one another.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views and give a clear opinion that international sports have a positive impact when competition is kept in perspective. The examples of athletes experiencing other cultures and showing respect are relevant, as is your point that losing can create hostility. However, these ideas are brief and mostly asserted rather than explained; for instance, you do not show how an event might build lasting cooperation or why medal-focused attitudes can damage relations. The conclusion repeats your position without adding much. The response is also 38 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to develop the discussion. Extend each main point with explanation or a specific example to address the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. The signposts “On one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow. This meets the expected level of coherent organisation, and the reader can identify your position. However, cohesion is somewhat mechanical because paragraphs rely heavily on these formulaic transitions, while links between individual claims are limited. The example about Olympic athletes, for instance, moves quickly from experiencing cultures to competing and showing respect without explaining the connection. Develop ideas in a more connected sequence, using clear references and cause-and-effect links rather than relying mainly on paragraph-opening phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, with relevant terms such as “competition,” “cultures,” “medals,” “teamwork,” and “unity.” These choices keep the response on topic, but the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or repetitive. “Bring countries together” and “countries to come together” recur, while “positive impact” and “positive environment” are broad rather than specific. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “pople,” “competitiors,” and “sports” where the intended meaning is sport in general. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully; alternatives such as “foster mutual understanding” can express your ideas more specifically.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use some simple and complex forms, including a conditional sentence: “If competitors behave responsibly then it will help them…” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but errors in sentence boundaries, agreement, and articles reduce accuracy. In the Olympic example, “athletes from different countries play together they also compete” joins two independent clauses without suitable punctuation or a conjunction. The opening also has a subject–verb agreement problem: “International Sports Events attracts.” In “it will create competition,” the pronoun reference is unclear, and “for sake of enjoyment” is missing an article. Practise combining clauses accurately and checking agreement and articles. More consistently controlled complex sentences would make the argument easier to read.
