Student answer (Band 6.0)

International sports event like The Olympics or the Football World Cup gathers the sports persons around the world in one place. Some people think that these games are creating a good impact by gathering countries together. While others think it as a competition between countries that create more boundaries.

On the one hand, people love the moments where the participants respect each other, despite having different nationality. For example, when an individual finds that our team has lost the tournament they immediately start supporting to other team who has the healthy memories with their team in the past. So, they think it as a step towards friendship and sportsmenship.

On the other hand, some people also think it in different way. They consider it only as competition between countries. For them it is either a win or a loss. These people only supports their country and consider others as rivals. For example, If they loses the competition, they feel the rival team has made it and the curses them for that. They has strong mindset of competition that they dont like to loose.

In conclusion, everyone has their own perspective. Some individuals thinks that coming together to play something is better for bond creation and a huge chance for international players to make world-wide friends and audiences. Whilst others think rivals can never be friends, especially when they are fighting for the same outcome. In my opinion, international sports events are huge events that give players a chance to show their cultural ethics and the spirit to fight for one trophy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views: the first body paragraph presents respect between athletes as a source of friendship, while the second explains how supporters may see other countries as rivals. Your conclusion also gives a personal view, focusing on cultural exchange and the chance to meet people. However, the position is not fully clear: the final opinion does not directly say whether these events bring countries together or create more competition. The supporting ideas are relevant but under-developed. For instance, the example about supporting another team is difficult to follow, and the claim that rivals “can never be friends” is not examined. State your view explicitly and explain one example in more detail to address the task more fully and consistently.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the discussion easy to follow, and the ideas generally progress in a sensible order. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some stronger control through paragraphing and linking. At times, however, connections between ideas are unclear or mechanical. In the first body paragraph, the example about a team losing and then supporting another team is hard to interpret, while “So” does not clearly show how the example proves the point. Use clearer references and explain the relationship between each example and its main idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main discussion, including “participants,” “rivals,” “tournament,” and “international players.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions such as “bond creation” and “cultural ethics.” However, the range is limited and several choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the intended meaning less clear. For example, “healthy memories” does not clearly describe a positive sporting relationship, and “cultural ethics” is not a natural way to refer to cultural exchange or values. “Sportsmenship” is also misspelled. Aim for more precise, natural phrases and check spelling; this will make your ideas easier to understand and give you more flexibility in discussing the topic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “While others think…” and a concession with “despite having different nationality.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to affect clarity. Examples include “these games are creating,” “These people only supports,” “they loses,” and “They has,” where the subject and verb do not agree. The opening sentence also needs a plural form and article adjustment: “International sports event like…” A few sentences, such as “For them it is either a win or a loss,” are clearer. Practise checking each sentence’s subject and verb, and build complex sentences with accurate clause structure.
