Student answer (Band 6.0)

Sports events are one factor that connects people among world, which is why many people believe that international sports like The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are great ways to bring nations together in one place. I strongly agree with them because sports are one way through which people build a healthy relationship with their counterparts, no matter what their nations political ideology is focusing. While there are others who say that these events create nothing but competitions and or enemity between countries.

Sports are one great way to unite people and nations, because it is a kind of entertainment. People come to events like The Olympics and the Football World Cup to run away from their stress full lives and make memories with their friends are families by watching their favourite sport event. For example, in the recent FIFA World Cup which was hosted by Canada, United States of America, and Mexico, I got opportunities to go and watch couple of matches with my friends, which I will cherish for my entire life. Not only my favourite-Argentina- team won the match, but also I was able to fulfil my dream of meeting Lionel Messi, who is my favourite player. Likewise, I have seen a lot of fans from its rivals coming and meeting players from Argentina, taking selfies, and also enjoying with Argentinian fans after match. This is a clear example for brotherhood, as it was so beautiful to see people respecting each others, even though, their nations politics differ.

However, there are people who still believe that sports would only creates enemies and competition due to its rival driven format. These people only see fans who fight after match outside the stadium due to many circumstances. This may be an exceptional case, and it is not suppose to be generalized, because fight happens only due to unusual circumstances, and we may only know the tip of the ice-berg.

In conclusion, it can be reiterated that sports can bring happiness and good connections between both people and nations because it is just a form of entertainment, the rivalry is just for the time of competitions. However, some people believes that sports just creates chaos, because they only want to see fights and generalize from just seeing that.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you agree that international sport can unite people, and you address the opposing view that rivalry can create hostility. The personal World Cup example, including meeting fans of Argentina’s rivals, gives relevant support to your main argument. However, the two views are not developed equally. The unity argument receives a detailed example, while the competition argument is mostly dismissed as an exceptional case; explaining how national rivalries or fan behaviour can sometimes intensify tensions would make the discussion more balanced. The conclusion restates your opinion, but it largely repeats earlier points. Develop the opposing view before explaining why you ultimately find the unifying effect more persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The progression from your personal example to the opposing argument is easy to follow, and signposts such as “However” and “In conclusion” help orient the reader. This meets the lower-band expectations and shows some stronger control through paragraphing and a logical sequence. At times, though, connections are mechanical or unclear. For instance, “These people only see fans who fight” does not clearly explain the relationship between the opposing view and the claim that such incidents are exceptional. The conclusion also repeats the introduction rather than synthesising the discussion. Use clearer referencing and link each example explicitly to the point it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including expressions such as “rival-driven format,” “brotherhood,” “counterparts,” and “tip of the iceberg.” These attempts to use less common vocabulary show ambition, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, some word choices, collocations, and spelling are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “stress full lives,” “enemity,” “favourite sport event,” and “a clear example for brotherhood.” These slips do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for established combinations and check spelling: for example, “stressful lives,” “hostility,” “favourite sporting event,” and “an example of solidarity.” Avoid using elaborate phrases when a simpler, more accurate expression is available.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “because,” “which,” and “even though.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main ideas remain understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence construction. Examples include “sports would only creates,” “some people believes,” and “people respecting each others”; these should be “sports would only create,” “some people believe,” and “people respecting each other.” The opening sentence also has an awkwardly constructed relative clause, and punctuation around inserted phrases is inconsistent. Review subject–verb agreement and sentence boundaries, then proofread for articles and plural forms. More accurate control of these patterns would make your complex sentences clearer.
