Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is widely believed that global sports events such as Olympics or World cups are good ways in bringing communities together. Proponents think that these tournanments create rivalries instead of friendship. This essay will discuss the viewpoints of both these people supporting different arguemnts before presenting my own opinion.

Supporters of the former view argue that organising these global sports events give people opportunity to make friendships. Undoubtedly, global audience come together to support their favorite player in the field despite their national identity. For instance, Christian Ronaldo is a famous football player and is the most followed person on Instagram throughout the world. Additionally, during common wealth games and other international sports complexes players live together. During this time they learn from each other, eat together and create bonds which last for years. Therefore, these sports events plays a vital role in maintaining peace and unity in the world.

Critics think that intense pressure of winning give birth of competitive environment. While representing a nation, players only aim to win the game. Due to this they play their game with intense focus which also create seriouness among the public in the stadium. Spectators aggressively cheer for their preferred teams or players by showing the flags, doing their national dance and so on. Consequently, this situation makes the place more overwhelming.

However, I remain convinced that international sports events have several positive results compared to it's negatives. By utilizing this opportunity of sports, most countries get chance to know and support each other better.

In conclusion, although global sports tournaments give birth to rivalries in the fields and fandom, it does provide the countries with positive results. From my perspective, Olympics, Football or Cricket World cups give immense opportunities for the nations for utilizing them in good ways.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and state your position: you argue that international events can build unity, while acknowledging that national representation can intensify rivalry. The examples of athletes living together and spectators supporting their teams are relevant. However, the discussion is unevenly developed. The friendship argument explains how athletes form bonds, but the claim that this promotes “peace and unity in the world” is broad and not fully supported. The competition paragraph describes focused players and enthusiastic fans, yet does not clearly explain how this competition damages friendship between countries. Your opinion is clear, but the conclusion mostly repeats it rather than adding a reason. Develop each side with a specific explanation of its effects on relations between nations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “For instance,” “Additionally,” “Consequently,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the sequence. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. “Supporters of the former view” is difficult to follow because the preceding sentence mistakenly attributes the opposing view to proponents, and “this situation makes the place more overwhelming” does not clearly identify the effect being described. The opinion paragraph is also brief and feels somewhat detached from the preceding discussion. Make the relationship between each example and its main point explicit, and use clearer references instead of relying on general phrases such as “this situation.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “national identity,” “intense pressure,” “rivalries,” and “unity,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at less common phrasing, such as “maintaining peace” and “representing a nation.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “ways in bringing,” “give birth of competitive environment,” and “sports complexes” for events. Spelling errors such as “tournanments,” “arguemnts,” and “seriouness” are noticeable and reduce precision. Some expressions are also vague, particularly “positive results” and “overwhelming.” Choose more natural collocations and precise terms, and proofread spelling so that your vocabulary conveys the intended meaning consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession clause beginning “although” and a relative clause in “a famous football player and is the most followed person.” Most sentences remain understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, and verb forms occur across the response. For example, “events give people opportunity” needs an article, “global audience come together” has a number-agreement problem, and “these sports events plays” should use a plural verb. In “intense pressure of winning give birth,” the subject and verb do not agree, and “compared to it's negatives” uses the wrong possessive form. Review subject–verb agreement, articles with singular countable nouns, and possessive forms. Greater accuracy in these patterns would make your varied sentence attempts more effective.
