IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the recent years, olympics or the football matches have brought people together on a common stage from all around the world. While some people believe events like these have created mutual harmony between many countries, some argue this has lead to a unleveled playground among various nations and they tend to compete with each other rather than creating friendship and bond among themselves during these mega events. In my opinion, overall this had lead to more good than harm. This essay will disucss both viewpoin

On one hand, countries come together at one stage to compete and it creates trust and mutual understanding between the audience and at the same time bring the organisers and the political leaders of those countries closer. Moreover, it provides a stage for diplomacy and discussion among various nationalities that participate these events.

On the other hand, sometimes the situation is not favourable at these events, when nations just participate to compete with each other and display their supermacy over the others. For instance, recently we have seen United States and China competing against each other in the Bejing Olympics, where they were just fighting for the number spot in the medal tally.

In conclusion, we all could not agree more on the fact that the world events have positively affected our society. They have brought nations closer than before. We have seen players getting together and appreciating the success of each others. For example, during the medal ceremony we found some players getting sentimental and have found winners motivating the runner-ups.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear overall position: international events bring countries closer and do “more good than harm.” The discussion of diplomacy and mutual understanding is relevant, as is the counterpoint that nations may focus on outperforming one another. However, these ideas are not developed equally. The claim that events build trust is asserted rather than explained, and the China–United States example mainly describes competition for medals without showing how this affects relations between countries. The conclusion returns to your view and adds a relevant example of athletes congratulating one another, but it does not fully weigh the two perspectives. Develop each main point with a clearer explanation of its impact and a more precise example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The signposts “On one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, and the reader can identify your position. This meets the expected level of coherent organisation. Some links are less smooth or precise, however. The introduction ends abruptly with “This essay will disucss both viewpoin,” which interrupts the flow, and the final paragraph repeats the idea that events bring nations closer without clearly connecting it to the earlier discussion of competition. Use complete transitions and make the relationship between each example and the paragraph’s main claim explicit to achieve more consistently logical progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “mutual understanding,” “diplomacy,” “nationalities,” “medal tally,” and “medal ceremony.” These choices help communicate both cooperation and rivalry, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at less common or formal expressions, but some are inaccurate or unnatural: “unleveled playground” does not clearly express unequal competition, “display their supermacy” is misspelled, and “runner-ups” is not the usual form. “Common stage” and “number spot” are also imprecise in context. Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling, especially in key topic words. More precise vocabulary would make your argument clearer and more flexible without requiring unnecessarily complex wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a contrast clause beginning “While some people believe…” and a longer sentence explaining the role of diplomacy. Most sentences remain understandable, so grammatical errors rarely prevent the reader from following your ideas. Some errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction remain. For example, “this has lead” should use the correct past participle, while “at the same time bring” does not agree with its subject. The opening sentence also has an awkward time expression, and the introduction’s final sentence is incomplete. Review subject–verb agreement and verb forms, and proofread each sentence for a complete grammatical structure. Greater accuracy in these areas would strengthen your control of complex sentences.
