Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is highly debated among people that international sport events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup bring countries together, while other raises concern about creating competion among countries instead of friendship. I strongly believe these events bring countries together and opens door for friendship.

It is inevitable that sporting events are organized to compete and to win, and hence the agression among the crowd and players towards the game. That does not necessarily mean it creates tension among countries. When players from different countries competes on an international stage, it can create rivalry among fans, both in the stadium and outside. For example, football match between England and Argentina is well-known for creating clash among their supporters.

On the other hand, to held such events, countries have to work closely with each other regardless of their political standpoints. Manytimes, it will bring countries closer and creates an opportunity to resolve underlying issues directly. When these events takes place, many countries lower or eliminate their import and export duties for specific countries to encourage and promote them. Morever, thousand of spectators including media personals and athletes travels abroad to attend an event. Which will allow them to explore different culture and understand the differences more clearly ultimately leading towards more understandable and peaceful community.

In conclusion, although the competitive nature of sports can occasionally lead to disagreements or rivalries between countries, the overall impact of global sporting event is positive. Therefore, I strongly believe that international sport events, are a good way to bring countries together.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and state a clear opinion: the opening says sporting events bring countries together, while the conclusion acknowledges rivalry but judges the overall impact positive. The England–Argentina example supports the competition side, and the discussion of cooperation and visitors supports your view. However, some points are under-developed or unclear: the claim that countries lower import and export duties is not explained or linked convincingly to sporting events, and the friendship benefits could use a specific example. The response also contains 240 words, so it is 10 words below the required minimum; 18 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. Develop the supporting ideas and meet the minimum to address the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on competition, a paragraph on cooperation, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help signal the direction of the argument, and the reader can follow your position. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however. In the cooperation paragraph, the move from resolving political issues to import and export duties, then to visitors exploring cultures, feels like a list rather than a connected explanation. The sentence beginning “Which will allow them” is also an unclear fragment, weakening the connection to the previous sentence. Group related points and use clearer references and explanations to make progression more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “political standpoints,” “underlying issues,” “rivalry,” and “spectators,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the overall impact … is positive.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, though: “agression among the crowd and players towards the game” does not express the intended idea clearly, and “more understandable and peaceful community” is not a natural description of the outcome. Spelling errors such as “competion,” “Morever,” and “Manytimes” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural collocations and proofread spelling so that your vocabulary supports rather than distracts from your argument.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a contrast clause in the introduction and a conditional-style explanation beginning “When players from different countries…”. Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “other raises concern,” “players … competes,” and “these events takes place.” The sentence “Which will allow them…” is a fragment, and the opening sentence needs clearer punctuation around its example and contrast. There are also problems with articles and plural forms, as in “football match” and “global sporting event.” Check agreement and sentence boundaries carefully, and revise complex sentences to ensure each has a complete main clause.
