IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that international sports bring different countries together on one page. Some people think such games develop competition between nations, such as cricket matches between Pakistan and India. I concur with the notion that sports events have a positive impact on international relations.
To begin with, many international events are held to develop strong bonds between countries. Such festivals encourage people to visit other countries, which increases global exposure by helping them get to know different cultures and people. For example, the FIFA World Cup was hosted by Canada in 2026, which has raised its tourism industry, therefore increasing the revenue of the country and being profitable for big companies as well as the local market. Thus, it is evident that people come together to watch a single sport, which is beneficial for the hosting country and the public living there.
Furthermore, some people think that when games are played between different nations, it creates competition and revelry among the public. Many famous sportsmen also cultivate such feelings in their fans, which results in a big tussle among them. Hence, many young people show their hatred for other international players on the internet. For instance, before any famous cricket match between Pakistan and India, people in the countries start a digital war on different social platforms. As a result these kind of events can create negative impact on people.
In conclusion, while some people think international sports events can create competition among the public. I believe such events bring people together to watch the games and give opportunities to visit other countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You discuss both views and state your position clearly in the introduction (“I concur” that sports events positively affect relations), then return to it in the conclusion. The examples of the World Cup and Pakistan–India cricket make the discussion relevant. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the first paragraph mainly explains tourism and economic benefits to the host, rather than showing how the event builds friendship between countries. The opposing view is more directly addressed through online hostility, but the explanation remains general and does not consider whether competition can also be healthy or temporary. To strengthen the response, explain the connection between shared sporting experiences and improved relations, and develop the counterargument before weighing it against your own view.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the main stages. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, with “Thus,” “Hence,” and “As a result” introducing conclusions that repeat or only loosely follow the preceding point. The first body paragraph moves from cultural exposure to the host country’s revenue without clearly linking these benefits to countries becoming closer. Some references are also unclear, as in “these kind of events,” where the plural reference does not match “events.” Use fewer formulaic transitions and make each sentence build explicitly on the previous idea.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “international relations,” “global exposure,” “tourism industry,” and “digital war,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at less common expressions, but some are inaccurate or unnatural in context. “Bring different countries together on one page” is not a natural way to express unity, while “revelry” does not mean rivalry or hostility. “Cultivate such feelings” is also vague, and “big tussle” is informal for an academic discussion. Aim for precise collocations and check that less familiar words convey the intended meaning. More accurate choices such as “foster mutual understanding” and “intense rivalry” would make the argument clearer and more appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses (“which increases global exposure”) and subordinate clauses (“when games are played between different nations”). Most sentences communicate their main meaning, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain, however. “Such games develop competition” is awkwardly structured, and “As a result these kind of events” needs a comma after the introductory phrase and agreement between “these” and “kind.” The final paragraph uses a full stop after “public” where the dependent opening clause should connect to the main clause: “While some people think …, I believe …”. Review agreement, clause boundaries, and punctuation, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
