Student answer (Band 5.0)

Nowadays, international sports events like The Olympics or the Football world Cup are becoming people's favourite events. However, some people believe that international events are a good way to bring countries together while others say that these events create competition, not friendship between countries. In my views, international events are good way to bring countries together.

On one hand, countries can develop friendships by playing together. Players from different countries come together and it can form their relationships good. They understand the cultures and things from different countries. Furthermore, such competitions form respect, love and understandings among other players. For example, in olympics players from all countries come together and celebrate each other's victory.

On the other hand, people think that these international events create competition, rivalry among other countries. For instance, in football or Olympics, people come from different countries doesnot like each other. They see them as there competition and rivals. The fans donot like the other countries players. Every country wants to win the medals. As a result, the fans support their own country and sometimes they become aggresive and it can create conflict among each other.

In my opinion, countries should come together and create friendships among other countries as well. It can make the world a better and peaceful place to live.

In conclusion, these events may bring competition, but they bring countries closer together.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address both views and state your position clearly in the introduction: you believe these events bring countries together. The examples about athletes celebrating one another’s victories and fans becoming aggressive are relevant, but the ideas remain general and are not developed with specific explanation or evidence. The conclusion repeats your view without adding much support. The response also contains 203 words, so it is 47 words below the required minimum; 27 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. This limits the space available to explain how sporting events can build friendship as well as why rivalry may arise. Develop each side with a specific example and explain its significance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is limited, and several points are listed rather than connected through explanation. For example, the paragraph about rivalry moves from players seeing one another as rivals to fans supporting their own country and becoming aggressive, without clearly showing how these ideas relate. Some linking phrases, including “Furthermore” and “As a result,” feel mechanical or do not establish a fully explained relationship. Group related points and use clearer references and transitions to show how each example supports the main idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “friendships,” “cultures,” “rivalry,” “medals,” and “aggressive.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, such as “bring countries together” and “other countries.” Some word combinations are unnatural, including “form their relationships good” and “form respect, love and understandings.” Spelling and written forms also need attention: “olympics,” “doesnot,” “donot,” and “aggresive” reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and vary repeated phrases; for example, describe athletes as “building mutual respect” or fans as “displaying hostility towards rival teams.” These changes would make your meaning more natural and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast in the introduction and a result clause beginning “As a result.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. Examples include “Players from different countries come together and it can form their relationships good,” where the clause structure and adjective placement are faulty, and “people come from different countries doesnot like each other,” where subject–verb agreement is incorrect. Articles and sentence patterns also need attention in “international events are good way.” Practise building accurate sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement, articles, and punctuation. For instance, write “These events are a good way to bring countries together” and “People from different countries may see one another as rivals.”
