Student answer (Band 5.5)

In today's world, competitions are part of the life. These competitions could be nationwide or worldwide. Some individuals have a percpective that international sports events such as The Olympics or the Football World Championship, are a good way to bring nations together while others believe that these events create competition, not friendship between countries. I will discuss both the views and give my opinion.

In this segment, I will throw some lights on how international sports events bring countries together. To begin with, people meet different pesonalities from the world. They could learn about different culturals. In addition, they could improve their communication skill. For instance, if The Olympics would be in India then Indians would have a chance to talk to others in English language which improves their communication skill. Furthermore, it would be benefit for the host country as economy could be boost.

On the other side, people would hate each other because they see them as a competitors. As a result, friendship between countries could be lost. Apart from this, people change their mindset to win-at-any-cost and they are willing to do anything to win which increases the crimerate.

In my opinion, any championship brings people together so that they could share some cultural values with others. In this global village, there is a plethora of things that people do not know. If such compitition held, people learn many things from others such as discipline, determination and so on.

Overall, there are more merits of bringing countries together due to some international sports events. So, I believe negatives could be negligible.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address both views and state your opinion, so the response is relevant to the task. The discussion of unity includes cultural exchange and communication, while the opposing view mentions hostility and a willingness to win at any cost. However, these points are brief and not fully explained: the example about Indians speaking English at an Olympics is hypothetical and does not clearly show how countries become closer. Your position is present, but the claim that the negatives are “negligible” is not reconciled with the earlier concern about crime. The response is 243 words, seven words below the 250-word minimum; the 21 words copied from the prompt were not counted. Develop each view with clearer explanation and a more convincing example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “On the other side,” and “In my opinion” helps readers follow the discussion. This coherent structure supports the argument, although some transitions feel formulaic and links between ideas are occasionally unclear. For example, the move from cultural learning to improved communication, then to the host country’s economy, introduces related but distinct benefits without explaining their connection. The conclusion repeats the preference for unity but does not fully connect it to the earlier point about hostility. Use linking phrases more selectively and make the relationship between each supporting point and the paragraph’s main idea explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “cultural values,” “mindset,” “determination,” and “host country,” and you attempt some less common expressions such as “win-at-any-cost” and “plethora.” However, the range is uneven, and several inaccurate word choices or collocations make the writing less natural: “throw some lights,” “different culturals,” and “a competitors” are examples. There are also spelling errors, including “percpective,” “pesonalities,” and “compitition.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main ideas, but they reduce precision. Focus on accurate topic vocabulary and common collocations, and check spelling and word forms during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional and subordinate structures such as “If such compitition held, people learn many things from others.” However, complex attempts are often faulty, and errors in articles, agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction occur frequently enough to affect fluency. For example, “these competitions are part of the life” needs a more accurate article pattern, while “it would be benefit” and “the economy could be boost” have incorrect grammatical forms. The conditional sentence about the Olympics also needs a consistent verb structure. Practise building accurate sentences with “if” clauses and modal verbs, and check subject–verb agreement and articles before adding more complex structures.
