Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Not a specific single game but all sports international, national, town, schools are playing very important role in humans history, present and in future. No doubt, all these games makes competition in between teams, but giving us very big lessons, for example how to do teamwork, who to stands for country, town, school or state. Moreover, by this competition, we learn to work hard to win and become successful. Everyone has their own choice to have opinion; some think worldwide games disturb relationships within countries, and some of them not agree of them, as I am also going with the second category. I will explain both views in next paragraphs.

To begin with opposite side of what views I have, international games such as Olympics, football world cup is sponser by very big companies. some people spend alot of money to win a single team so they poping to them which creates a hate by another team's fan. Furthermore, this sports not playing by only players because who wins these games, they took trophy to their country, which makes their reputation and status widely in the world, which creates competition and bad realtions with other countries.

However, other group thinks these sports never create bad competition and bad realtions between countries. To explain this, recently FIFA world cup happend in Canada, I watched everyting online, as I saw so many person from Canada, America and from another countries prays for a player Chirstaino Ronaldo to win, it shows everything is varies, indivdiuals like players by their performance and by their nature. Moreover, Christanio belongs from different country still a big country spoend alot of money for this world cup, it proves these games building realtions between counties.

To wrap up, I think these games help us to learn about different countries their culture and talent. Therefore these kind of activities are not breaking freindship between countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and state your own position: you explain that international events can create rivalry, then argue that they can also build relationships. The examples about fans supporting Ronaldo and a host country investing in the tournament are relevant attempts to support your view. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The first side relies mainly on sponsorship, spending and fans’ reactions, without clearly explaining how these lead to conflict between countries. The second example is also difficult to follow, and the claim about a recent World Cup in Canada is not clearly connected to the point. Develop each view with a clearer cause-and-effect explanation and a specific, accurate example; make your opinion explicit and consistent throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Paragraph openings such as “To begin with” and “However” help signal the change in perspective, and the conclusion returns to your opinion. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow. For example, the first body paragraph moves from sponsorship to fans and then to national reputation without clearly linking these points. Several sentences are long and contain repeated “which” clauses, making the relationships between ideas unclear. Some transitions, including “To wrap up,” are also formulaic. Organise each body paragraph around one main reason, explain it in a logical sequence, and use pronouns and linking phrases only where their references are clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “competition,” “teamwork,” “reputation,” “status,” and “relationships,” which helps communicate the general subject. There are also attempts to express more specific ideas, such as fans supporting a player from another country. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, sometimes making the reader work to understand the point. Examples include “poping to them,” “bad competition,” and “building realtions.” Spelling errors such as “sponser,” “happend,” and “freindship” are noticeable. Build a more precise set of phrases for international sporting events and practise common collocations, such as “foster goodwill” and “intensify national rivalry.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including sentences beginning with “Moreover” and “However,” and the overall meaning can usually be understood. However, control is inconsistent, and complex sentences often contain several errors. For example, “all these games makes” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “who to stands” and “this sports not playing” show difficulties with verb forms and sentence construction. Articles and plurals are also unreliable, as in “a single team” and “these kind of activities.” Punctuation and sentence boundaries need attention, particularly where a new sentence begins with a lowercase letter after a full stop. Practise accurate basic clauses first, then combine them using one clear subordinate clause at a time.
