Student answer (Band 4.0)

Nowadays few people believe that international sports events, such as the olympics or the football world cup, are a good way to bring coutries together. While others say these events creates competition not friendship between countries.

I believe that the olympics and the world cup bring players and contries togather to play together with a energy and spirit. Teams play with sportsmenship and agression on the ground. When a team wins the players celebrates together with happiness.

Sometimes these events creates competition and controvarsy between players and the officials.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

You state a relevant opinion—“the olympics and the world cup bring players and contries togather”—and briefly acknowledge the opposing view that events can create competition. However, the response does not adequately discuss both views or give reasons and examples to support them. The point about players celebrating after a win is relevant but undeveloped, while “controvarsy between players and the officials” is only mentioned, not explained. The response is also far below the required 250 words: it contains 68 words, and 21 words copied from the prompt were not counted. To address the task more fully, explain how events can foster contact between nations, develop how rivalry may cause tension, and support both points with specific examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The response has a basic overall sequence: an opening that introduces the two views, a paragraph stating your opinion, and a final point about competition. This gives the reader some sense of direction. However, the ideas are too brief to form a clear, sustained progression, and the final paragraph does not explain how it relates to the earlier claim that sport brings people together. The opening also repeats the task’s framing rather than developing it. Use separate, developed paragraphs for the two views and your opinion, and connect them with clear transitions such as “On the one hand” and “However.” Explain the relationship between each example and your main point so the organisation feels more coherent.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “international sports events,” “competition,” “players,” and “officials,” so the subject is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “spirit” and “controvarsy.” However, the range is narrow and several spelling errors—“coutries,” “togather,” and “controvarsy”—make the writing less accurate. Some combinations are also unnatural, for example “with a energy and spirit” and “play with sportsmenship and agression.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, such as “a sense of unity,” “sportsmanship,” and “intense rivalry.” Developing the response with precise vocabulary for cooperation and conflict would also help you express the two sides more clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt both a complex opening with “While” and several simple sentences, and the main meaning can usually be understood. However, control is inconsistent. In “these events creates,” the plural subject requires “create”; in “the players celebrates,” the plural subject requires “celebrate.” The opening “While others say…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence, so it needs to be joined to the preceding clause. There are also article and sentence-pattern problems in “with a energy and spirit.” Most sentences follow simple patterns, with little variety beyond the opening. Practise forming complete complex sentences and checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and punctuation; this will make your ideas clearer and more accurate.
